Most of the students think that once they enter a medical college, they just have to treat patients and do not have much dynamic career opportunities like other professions. That is certainly not the case. After the completion of the MBBS course, the medical graduates may go for the PG medical course leading to the MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery) degree.

Doctor of Medicine (MD)
Doctor of Medicine or MD course is a postgraduate medical degree in general medicine. MD is mostly non-surgical, but there are some branches where surgery can be part of this PG medical Course. An MBBS graduate who completes MD course or Doctor of Medicine becomes a Physician. The duration of Doctor of Medicine or MD is 3 years.

Master of Surgery (MS)

Master of Surgery or MS course is a postgraduate medical degree in general surgery. MS is for the fields where more of surgical expertise and skills are required. An MBBS graduate who completes MS course or Master of Surgery becomes a surgeon. The duration of Master of Surgery or MS is 3 years.

PG Medical Course – Eligibility Criteria

Prospective students for PG medical course leading towards a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Master of Surgery (MS) degree should have successfully passed their MBBS from a recognized medical college and completed one-year compulsory rotating internship after MBBS.

PG Medical Courses – Entrance Exam for MS / MS Admission
MBBS graduates who choose to pursue PG Medical Course after MBBS must qualify in PG entrance exam. In order to secure PG medical admission in medical colleges in India, one must qualify in NEET PG entrance exam conducted by National Board of Examinations (NBE) for MBBS graduates. NEET PG is a single window PG medical entrance exam for Postgraduate medical courses in India.
