For current residents - what's your advice for applying to pgy-1 programs? Ideally, I would like to match in the same city for all four years. But, in order to cover all possible cities (where I am applying to optho), there are something like 130 programs prelim med. and transitional. Has anyone tried sending out applications to specific pgy1 programs after you receive an interview for optho in that city? So, if I receive an interview from Wills, I can just send out my eras to philadelphia programs? Or would this be too late in the ERAS application process?

Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing! I asked a faculty member the same question and she indicated that it would be in my best interest to "cover all bets" by applying to pgy1 spots in each city I applied for ophtho in. I am compromising though. In eras, you get 10 programs for the set price of $60, and since I applied to both IM and transitional year programs, I knew that I was out $120 at the very least. So, I applied to 20 programs in cities that I felt strongly that I would be competive to interview for ophtho at, and would seriously consider living in. I am going to try to "apply on the fly" to other pgy1 programs as I get interviews. Hope this helps. Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated.
