Just received my contract with LSUHSC-NO. The first year salary went up from last year! 👍

I will be receiving $38,598 for my first year (HO1 or PGY1)! Last year was $36,413, this amount was unchanged for the last 4 years for HO1/PGY1s at LSUHSC-NO. That's a 6% raise, national average raise is around 3% when stipends increase!

Other perks: I will be receiving 21 non-cumulative paid vacation days in my first year and 28 non-cumulative paid vacation days in years after.

I know LSU residency system is one of the lowest paid system out there in the US according to the AAMC survey see below attached document. Average HO1 stipend in the country is around $42K! So that sparks a question to my fellow OMFS "newbies" (who matched in 2006), how much will you be paid in your 1st year?

Free Willy, $42K is definitely not the same as my $38K! That additional $3K can buy a lot of #2 with a coke at McDs!

Oh my gosh , forgive me if I'm wrong, base on what my friend told me, first year at Arizona is about $98K/year ??? Why first year for a dentist is so low $38, $42K ???

May I ask when a dentist will be making about $100K ??? What year would it be after graduated ?

These guys are talking about RESIDENT salary not private practice income. In my opinion a general dentist should be making minimum $120K immediately after graduation (without AEGD or GPR).

Don't forget to take cost of living into account. $38K in Louisiana will probably go further than $42K in Portland. Life is cheap in LA...

Amen. Try NY or Chicago! No thanks. My 48,XXX gives me a 2500 square foot 9 year old house (not renting mind you, its mine errrrrrrr- the banks 🙂 ) with plenty left over. After the grueling poverty of dental school, we are eating well, big house, investing almost 10% of our income per year all on resident salary! This part of life is much better than dental school.

I was waiting for you to post. I had it in my mind that you all get one of the healthiest salaries compared to the cost of living. Nice work on the investing as well--I'm sure you've seen how those few thousand dollars will work over the next 25 years. It's unbelievable how starting a little earlier pays off huge in the end...

Not anymore, after Katrina. Rental property availabilities have decreased, rental demands have sky rocketed, intact realty that is livable, prices have gone up so it's bad time to buy.....all this equals cost of living increase!

I believe this is the sole reason for LSUHSC-NO resident stipend's 6% increase. National stipend increase is only roughly 3-4% each year. From 2001-2002 unitl 2005-2006, the LSUHSC-NO's first year stipend remained at $36K!

An one bedroom apartment in New Orleans usually is around $600 for a decent one at a decent location. Now, even the ****ty-est one bedroom is around $700! Apartment complexes have waiting lists.....

I'll be going to NO for a week in the beginning of May, hopefully I'll find a place to rent in reasonable price range where I can call home for the next year.

From what I'm gathering for other OMFS residents...sounds like most residencies start at $40K! LSUHSC-NO's first year house officers definitely receive below national's average for HO1s. Don't get me wrong, I'm not b!tching, simply stating a fun fact.

Try LA, California not Louisiana. A one bedroom apartment rents for 1500 a month in a s***y area. Esclavo, your 2500 sq.ft. house in LA would be about $850,000-$1,000,000. 😱

I don't think the hurricane had anything to do with it. Our salary was raised by six percent this year, right before I started, from $36,XXX to $38,XXX. The reason they raised it by six was because they hadn't raised it in several years. I don't recall there being a devastating hurricane in the year prior, so I'm going to exclude that from the reasoning. We're all in the same state system, so it seems that they, N.O., would have to pretty much follow suit.

Maybe it's because of the natural diaster that LSU in NO decided to raise it, therefore, Shreveport had to followed suit because you guys are in the same system.

I'm sure the fact that $36K had been around for years that has something to do wit it as well. Either way, I'm just glad that they raised it!

No it wasn't. It was because i bitched about it my intern year so the state raised it.

Yah e, cardsfan was here before the hurricaine, and the raise went into effect the year he started (like day 1 he started), therefor it couldn't be becuase of a hurricaine that happened after they initiated the pay increase. Remember the chicken and the egg thing.......?

In cali, I'd be mowing the lawn in front of that house...trimming the hedges not living in it...watering the flowers (not the "watering" you were thinking of!!!)
