Folks....... any idea how it is to get a PGY2 after Internship (prelim) in surgery (if your program does not provide a PGY 2 spot for you).
Is it as tough as for getting PGY-1 cat.?

Any input is appreciated.

Hi there,
The question is " Why do you need a PGY-2 slot?" Are you looking for a categorical PGY-2 slot or did you need two years of general surgery before going into a surgical specialty?

Categorical PGY-2 slots may not be that difficult to find as some folks do one year under the 80-hour work week and decide that surgery is not for them. Some people are just not able to perform in surgery and are asked to leave programs. There is a fair amount of shifting going on between PGY-1 and PGY-2. You need to start contacting programs and fellow classmates that might know of open slots right now. These are done outside the MATCH and you can sign a contract at any time.

If all else fails, you can go back into the MATCH and start over and match in a categorical slot. Sure you lose a year but you are a better candidate if you have done a year and done very well. (Read excellent ABSITE scores and performance evaluations).

Good luck!

Would Medicare allow this? Would medicare pay for "repeating" the PGY-1 year?

Thanks
