Real doctors use cloramphenicol!!!!!

Hahahahahaha! There really is a method to drug names (chemical & generic ones - not brand names), but you have soooooo much info other than drugs that you have to learn it seems overwhelming. I admire you for remembering what you do. If I can give you one serious suggestion though...try learning the drugs by class then when you are presented with a new one, you would have an educated guess (ie..quinapril, lisinopril, benazepril - all ACE inhibitors; ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, levofloxacin - all fluoroquinolone antibiotics...notice the pattern?). Unless it is an exam, you can always look it up or call a pharmacist. Hope that helps!

I can never say the names of COX-2 Inhibitors (rofecoxib, celecoxib, etc.)the right way...that and bilirubin.

....and thats why we have brand names...Vioxx, Celebrex...But..when you see that in the pts past medical history on one of your exams...you'll remember it was a cox-2 inhibitor because it ended in -oxib, then you'll ask.....well - I can't answer that, but you're in medical school so you'll figure that out! That's the beauty of the system - it's all integrated and (usually) works. Good luck to all of you - you have soooo much to learn and drugs are only one part.

It certainly is. I hope my friend who thinks she wants to be a pharmacist knows this!

 to those of us who actually become pharmacists...pharmacology (& if you can believe it - pharmacokinetics) is fascinating!! To each his (her) own! Good luck - its only a small part of your curriculum.

Yes the COX 2 names are wacky but how bout "efavirenz" even the detailer has a slide of the pronounciation... Also I second this: Put each med into a category! But in the end just give me some more "lasix", originally given to race horses, after the race. Also one could take almost take a month to cover the antiretroviral drugs thouroughly. More prozac, prilosec and lasix please. {By the way the name losec was changed to prilosec because of mass confusion with losec and lasix.}Pass the lasix!
