I am curious to find out if anyone on this board has had this before. I know the new trend for pharmacy schools is to build a dispensing lab that is a simulated model of a real pharmacy. For example, I know that the University of Georgia, University of Maryland, LECOM, and some others have added this to their curriculum. What exactly are the lab exercises that you do in this type of lab? If any of you could PM me or post to the thread, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks!

Caver,
they teach you how to count by fives I think.....Just kidding I don't know just starting P1 this fall.
DR

oh yeah while the instructor/patient screams that thier copay just went up 10 cents
I'm not a troll just poking some fun.

We just got ours (at UOP) this year...it's awesome, they spent like millions on it but it's finally done. Last semester for Derm lab, we did some compounding and basic counseling sessions. We made lotions, ointments, cremes...for psoriasis, tick bites, acne, etc., then stuck the label onto the vials/bottles, and counseled. Kinda neat!

Did they have computer terminals for you to use as well to print the order?

No we don't have those yet so the professor had labels printed out for us to just stick on the vials and initial/exp date.

Hi, I go to MCV/VCU and we have 4 semesters of skills lab. In our P3 year, we did compounds ranging from making metronidazole suspensions to ointments to filling our own capsules. Towards the end of the 1st semester, we began learning aseptic techniques and made TPAs and epidurals. For each assignment, we were given a fake rx and had to make labels on the computers, print them out, label the bottles, and counsel. In our P4 year, the skills lab was tied with our Pharmaceutical Analysis class so we practiced using a variety of glucose monitors, cholesterol, BMD, etc. And I'm not sure what is yet to come for us in our P5 year. I think it's a great asset to the curriculum. Hopefully you'll enjoy it! Have fun! 🙂

Dispensing Lab? Do they have Labtops?

Why are we trying to learn our precious pharmacy students with skills our pharmacy technicians embrace?

If the lack of dispensing skill is adversely affecting student's outcome in Naplex..perhaps Naples should be modified..instead of schools putting in the "Dispensing Labs." :meanie:

it's spreading like an sdnemic... 😱

We have IPP (Intro to Pharmacy Practice) class for 2nd years (of 6 yr school). In lab we do entering prescription, labeling, looking up drug info, and basic compounding (capsules & ointments & lotion). The class itself was pharmacy calculations.
In 3rd yr we have Pharmaceutics, and it's pretty much like advanced IPP.

This class was supposed to give an intro to pharmacy profession...well, I hated this lab. We had to check everything on the Rx manually (DEA#, pts allergy, medical history, drug interaction) and it took good 30 mins before we could even print the label. When we did compounding, it took about an hour since we had to do calculations + checking Rx + making it. After that I thought I hated pharmacy (It takes me 1 hr to do this 😡?!) but now I actually intern at Walgreens, this is not the case, computer does pretty much all  and I understand why people say they use ~10% of what they actually learned.

mcphs worcester has an area in the school like this. it is sponsored by cvs and looks like a mini pharmacy. there is a compounding lab behind the mini pharmacy where, at the time i interviewed, students were making deodorant and herpes meds. there are also private patient counseling rooms where students are videotaped and tested on how effectively they can communicate with their patients. there were computers at every station, but i am not really sure of their use.
