Hey guys,

I saw some posts on this issue but I wanted to see if someone with real experience has something to share.

I know that in person interviews are much better (personal contact, you get to meet students, all of the faculty, the town, etc). But do people often get accepted after choosing to do phone interviews or do these usually result in waitlist??? I know some programs are understanding if you can't make it and are willing to work with you, but even then how likely are you to get accepted????

Any advice would be appreciated!!!

Having done both, I would strongly urge you to do an in-person interview whenever possible. Yes, in rare circumstances and with exceptionally qualified applicants it is possible to get an offer via a phone interview...but that is not the norm.

Someone in my cohort (at a pretty competitive, fully funded, Counseling Psych PhD program) was accepted after a phone interview. She beat out several in-person interviewees. Certainly possible, although the prof will obviously have less of a feel for you after a phone interview.
