Physical Therapist(DPT) applying to Med School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think your GPA is okay, definitely need MCAT info to paint a better picture. Do you have any shadowing experience?

No direct shadowing of doctors. Not sure if my Clinical experiences of working/shadowing with doctors in ER/OR (ortho surgeries) count?

I am hopping to crack at least a 30!

Haha, for the new MCAT, that means at least a 507.

With that MCAT shot you will have a chance. Are you looking for MD or DO schools?

I currently am a New Grad with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. After doing 1 year of clinical rotations I am getting motivated to apply to med school. As a 17 year old kid graduating high school I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do so I opted to do a 6 year PT program. Towards the end of my program, I realized that I wanted to purse med school but it didn't make sense to drop in my last year.

I just wanted to get a other people's opinion as to what they think my chance of getting into med school are. My credientials are listed below:

Undergrad GPA: 3.256
Gradschool GP: 3.5
Clinical experience(rotations - 10 months): Outpatient, Acute Care, Home Care
Capstone(thesis): Comparing strength changes in dumbells vs Theraband

(I didn't do too well my freshmen year of college. However, got nothing less then a B from years 3-6)

My GPA is a little different then most people because my senior of college I took first year PT classes(Gross anatomy, Neuroscience, etc) which I did very well in. My program was unique because all my classes were pre-picked and I received dual undergrad and grad credits.

From my understanding I can't start med school before 2017. This gives me time to prepare for MCAT, Shadow, etc. I would live any insights/advice

Thanks!

So which came out on top, dumbells or Theraband???

Sounds very do-able to me. Focus on the MCAT and try to a shadow a DO.

Z-Qualizer= We saw an higher increase in concentric strength in Dumbbell and eccentric strength with Theraband, however the results were not significant. One cool thing we noted was that Theraband had a much higher compliance rate due to its easy accessibility.

Awesome - I'm always intrigued by new research related to strength and/or hypertrophy. Thanks for responding & I apologize for semi-diverting your thread. Best of luck in your next journey, to and through med school!!

I enrolled in PT school, although I didn't finish. I withdrew after one semester, took the MCAT (got below a 30), worked as a scribe for 1 + years, volunteered, and applied this cycle. So far 7 DO interviews and an acceptance to my top choice DO program. Definitely possible, best of luck to you!!

Best of luck to you!

My GF's orthopedic surgeon was a PT before he went back to med school.

[QUOTE Nhnative: Thats great to know! Would you mind sharing any additional details/recommendations? As in how many hours I should shadow or anything specific that could help with the application process.[/QUOTE]
I don't think there's anything I did specifically because of going to PT school. I didn't use any of my PT shadowing on applications, I don't think it's really relevant. I was able to get a job as a scribe, so have 1+ years clinical experience for applications, which I think also helps to show that you have seen the field and absolutely want to do medicine instead of PT. Writing a good personal statement explaining the switch is also key. Other than that, I think the standard recommendations of volunteering, shadowing, doing well on the MCAT (take time off work if at all possible to study!) etc are the same 🙂

Nice dude good luck. Im considering the same path. Im still in OT school though.

I say work PT for a couple years to get an insight into the many health professions then apply as nontrad. With PT, I'd imagine DO schools should be a cinch for you.

I debated between medicine and pharmacy when I was in college. Now that I've been working as a full time community pharmacist (for the most part) for 6+ years, I think now with the pt experience and other professional experiences I've had, I can make a much better physician than I would have straight outta college.

And you can also pay back your student loans then save up or invest for med school costs. Not only have I paid off all my student debt of 8 years, I have enough assets to be able to graduate med school going into residency with little to no debt
