In the mid 90s there were projections based on trends at the time (if you look at how they came up with these projections it was ridicuous) that there was an impending glut of specialists.
The surplus never materialized and we are now facing an impending "crisis" within the next 3-4 years as all the boomers hit medicare age. This is why there is such a big push for all the "physician extenders". They are looking for a cheaper way to care for all the boomers.
Actually, the situation is quite the opposite. There is a physician shortage in the US that is predicted to only get worse. I think it stems from the fact that medical schools aren't increasing the numbers of students in classes necessary to keep up with the growing and aging population.
