I heard that the job market for physicians in California is declining 😱 I'm not sure if this is true, but it seems possible considering new positions such as Physicians Assistants. Anyone have any comments/info on this???
gracias

i would want to see the source on that but if you look at demographic trends, becoming a doctor is an industry that to me, will grow. The average age of an American will go up like 10 years as Baby Boomers and Generation X people start to hit the mid 40s to 50s. That's not saying in Cali, a state with a really messed up healthcare system, doctors are needed... but to me if it's a national trend, it can't be that different in a state.

its kind of complicated to analyze....

Regarding to the increase in population, mainly geriatric...i think when it comes to doctors, there will be an increase demand in primary care and not specialists...so its a lot more than if doctors demand is in decline in general...but rather what types of doctors are in decline...

For example docs such as anesthiologists are in decline because hospitals want to cut costs and hire more nurse anesthetists. Reasoning that you dont need that much anesth (just a few to supervise and do the major stuff) around. Also read somewhere that the pay for primary care physicians are going upward on a trend whereas most specialists are somewhat stagnent...forgot the article link though...very very complicated

the future of prospective physician employment is important....but in the end, just do if you have a passion for it...im sure even if there is a decline that it will still be somewhat rewarding monetarily wise if that is what your looking for...i mean after all, never heard of a physician having major money trouble right?

major money troubles for docs? that would totally suck esp when the payments for the gigantic loans for our education come in....sigh...not to mention living expenses and the like.....looks like i'll be renting for a looooong a$$ time.

Pay for physicians in California is amongst the lowest in the country. Sure, if you're willing to work in the interior or the northern part of the stae, you'll get high pay and your pick of jobs. But along the coast, yeah, you're looking at lower pay, greater market saturation, and higher living expenses.

Medmal is pretty good in Cali (if you're looking for a silver lining).
