So I know this is the pre-med forum and all, dont jump on me just yet. I'm just curious to see who and what about this right now. So, if you had to pick right now, a specialty to go into, what would you pick? Yeah yeah, its early I know, I'm interested in hearing the view of people going in or I would have posted it in a different forum. So, what specialty? Its interesting to see the personalities and all of people here and what specialty they would choose right now.

I've been honestly undecided but I'm really leaning towards emergency medicine and even more far fetched, I'm really thinking about a fellowship in toxicology (I'm not ruling out my dream of wilderness medicine btw!) :) Other than that, I've thought about rads.

I know it will change, but its an interesting experiment to see what people would pick right now.

99% sure about CC/IM or CC/Anes. I love the pulmonary aspect of CC medicine. Lately I've been considering pediatric surgery, but my heart is pretty much already set.

I love working with kids so I'm leaning towards pediatrics at the moment. I'll probably want to do a fellowship of some sort too. We'll see though. :)

Psychiatry or Neurology. Psychiatry interests me a lot because it's field few go into. But its easily a life style specialty. I also think outside the first intern year your going to have a easy residency life too.
Neurology has always been very interesting to me too, I've always been extremely fond of neuroscience and understanding some cognition. However I've always been more interested in perception rather then sensory work. It's one of my psychology things XD; Neuro-linguistic has always really interested me. Also both my grandmothers have been badly hit with minor dementia. So for me figuring out how to maintain the brain and improve cognition has sentimental value.

Same, here although my interest in neurology is towards brain injuries and perhaps by extension spinal cord and other nervous system injuries.

Thats awesome. :D

Either diagnostic radiology with interventional fellowship or neurology with interventional fellowship.

Either IM/ GI or Pediatric Psychiatry. Psychiatry has always intrigued me and I love working with kids so that's probably where I would go.

Way too early for you guys to pick something. 99% of you will change your minds as you have no idea what said specialty entails in work, etc until you actually live it 3rd and 4th years.

As per my avatar, organ transplantation has been my dream. Cardiothoracic surgery.

That said, I work on an orthopedic unit and that is pretty interesting as well. Thought about EM and shadowed an ER doc. I was glad I did because I found out I would HATE emergency med lol. Keeping an open mind about everything though.

Emergency Medicine is what i enjoy ( working in an ER and for a Fire dept).

I enjoy watching the physicians and helping them with everything they do in the ER ( just helped reduce this guys shoulder last night...that was pretty fun)

I also would think i would get too bored with anything too specific. Id like to be a jack of all trades and master of none so......Right now i would have to say

EM/IM

EM/FM

or just EM

yes to pathology, and yes to infectiouse disease, ur prob just like me. like tiny microbes and find them more fascinating than anything! well i do. do keep in mind infectiouse disease is below average pay for specialists doctors tho, it is just barely above general. i would assume the training for it is a little less.

If I had to choose right now, I'd probably do IM or Peds (or IM/Peds) with a GI fellowship. I'm kinda interested in EM too though, particularly the toxicology subspecialty.

You know me so well! Ob/Gyn FTW! Most likely general Ob/Gyn; REI and MFM appeal to me, but I think I'd miss doing more deliveries if I went that route.

I think it's hilarious that we seem to be the only two nuts on pre-allo that want to got his route.

Second option, pediatrics/neonatology.

Also, that flowchart is hilarious! But where is Ob/Gyn on it? It should probably be on the crazy side.

Im not 100% sure, i know what i absolutely will not do (surgery, peds, geriatric, derm, psych). Theres a few things im interested in but as of now id say 3 things that i think id like are heme/onc, radiology, or pulm/cc. Most likely id imagine id do IM then a fellowship in something. But i can guarantee im going to change come clerkship time:). Im just too open to many different specialities and need some more experience to figure it out.

Trauma Surgery...no guts no glory
I spent nearly 8 months in trauma surgery (my mentor is head of trauma surgery back home) and followed nearly everyday, carried the code 88 pager, etc. Absolutely LOVED it, but being an old fart the residency length bothers me as well as the lifestyle. But man I loved, loved, loved it!!

Way too early for you guys to pick something. 99% of you will change your minds as you have no idea what said specialty entails in work, etc until you actually live it 3rd and 4th years.
I'm so glad the voice of reason and experience has blown through our little naive thread.
Oh also thanks for reading my OP. :D

The crazy side is too small. I suggest another tab under Attention Span for "Somewhere in the middle." Then "Likes to look at penises" -> Urology and "Likes to look at vaginas" ->Ob/Gyn. :D

I have three specialties that interest me as a pre-med. I'm into things like philosophy, and I have a lot of experience with psychiatric illnesses, so I think I might like psychiatry... on the other hand, I really enjoyed cellular biology, so maybe pathology or genetics. Genetics would be kind of cool because I like kids, and what geneticists do--particularly their research--is very exciting to me. I'm taking a masters' level class with an MD medical geneticist in my last semester, and I'm loving it.

But, who knows. The flowchart from above tells me psychiatry. We all know that flowcharts cannot lie. >.>

I'm interested in critical care, emergency medicine and PM&R. However, everything I'm interested in I'm MORE interested in if it's pediatrics. I like the fact that pretty much everything that exists for adults has a pediatric fellowship too. I could see myself in general peds as well, but NOT family medicine.

Crazy, overbearing parents > patients who drank/ate/smoked/motorcycled themselves into their problems.

Every couple of months, I change my mind, lol. The flavor of the month is ophtho.
Haha, same here. I've considered numerous different specialties. The one constant though that has always interested me has been oncology, so that's what I'm gonna say.
