Pick your specialty quiz

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gastroenterology was my top one, a lot IM on top along with pediatrics and dermatology. Lowest is IM- cardiology. Interesting but I have shadowed IM and interventional cardiologists. I found specialists to be more enthralling.

1. Rad Onc (surprising)
2. Pediatrics (i would never)
3. Internal Medicine - Hematology
4. PM&R (expecting it somewhere)
5. Internal Medicine - Med. Onc. (expecting it somewhere too)

Totally NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT I DO

Plastic surgery (that would be cool)
Nephrology (I am not smart enough, gross)
OB/GYN: NO NO NO NO and HELL NO
IM Oncology: NO NO NO NO Never
Orthopedic surgery: UGH boys and their toys
Thoracic Surgery: SO glad I don't ever have to crack a chest.

Mine said 67% match for family practice.

I had weird and unexpected results:

Path - 72%
Derm - 71%
Nuclear Med - 69%
IM - infectious diseases - 68%
IM - gastroenterology - 68%
Allergy & Immuno - 68%

Never thought of basically 5/6 of the top ones.

Ophtalm 75
Urology 73
Otolar 70
IM-Card 70

hmmm...good luck getting into ANY of these residencies with a DO degree...lol

and yea...my bottom ones were:
Psych
Pathology
FM
IM-Rheum

I think I have a better chance there :/

Not unexpected for the first....more so for the next couple. I must not have been decisive enough because there was only ~15% spread between highest and lowest.

Internal Medicine
69% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology
68% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Rheumatology
67% Personality Match

Preventative Medicine - Public Health and General
67% Personality Match

Psychiatry
67% Personality Match

what i liked about this quiz is that it seems to be based on the personality of the specialties themselves instead of the perceived personalities of the docs who work in them...if that makes sense. seems like its gonna be impossible to pick what we are "best" at , seeing how we will only be doing the bottom of the bottom part of the jobs..hopefully we will be able to do enough to make a decision

Internal Medicine-Medical Oncology 85% match
Psychiatry (no way in hell)-81% match
Internal Medicine-Nephrology 79% match
Internal Medicine-Hematology 79% Match
Pediatrics-79% Match

All but Psych and Peds are things I'm quite interested in....

How are people getting matches in the 90s? My spread was from 62%-72% :( for all of them.
That's what I'm trying to figure out. I don't really know how I got in the 90th percentile

That's what I got, too. My highest was a 67%. Anesthesia was 66%. I'm kind of depressed and hate my life every other day. Maybe it means we shouldnt have went into medicine.

Did you answer with 1s, 2s, 9s, and 10s or 4s, 5s, and 6s? I wonder if those of us that didn't get very definite results were more equivocal in our answers.

Try this advice from the pre-allo thread for better/clearer results:

I think one reason so many people are surprised by the results they are getting is because they might not be taking the assessment properly. I used to be a certified Gallup strengths coach, and ran weekend retreats on personality assessments (MBTI and Strengths Finder). You aren't supposed to ever choose a "middle" score. It should only ever be 10 or 0, nothing else. Anything in-between zeros out your response, or leads to fuzzy results.

It's also why people get their top results in the low 80's or high 70's, or have every result in the 90's.

Take it again and only choose 10 or 0 on the questions and you'll understand your results better because they will be an accurate reflection of your personality.

Btw: 90% hem-onc and 90% ER, 89% Ob-Gyn. I can live with all of those (and they so happen to be the specialties I'm most interested in!).

I'm going to take this quiz again. I think I took the quiz like last year and it was saved. I don't think it was accurate.

Now this makes much more sense:
1. General Surgery- 78%
2. Orthopedic surgery- 77%
3. Internal Medicine- Pulmonary Disease- 74%
4. Urology- 74%
5. Dermatologist- 74%
6. Radiation Oncology- 73%
7. Plastic Surgery- 73%

That's what I got, too. My highest was a 67%. Anesthesia was 66%. I'm kind of depressed and hate my life every other day. Maybe it means we shouldnt have went into medicine.

Isn't first year always the worst? Pretty much every doc I ever met hated 1st year of residency. Some were even close to having breakdowns in the middle of it and wanting to quit. That said, eventually they all got into something they like or found a job/hospital that really worked for them.

The proper strategy for taking the assessment (it's not a quiz--there are no right or wrong answers) was quoted above. If you guys/gals aren't getting a 90%+ match on something, you have taken it wrong. If you get 5 or more things with 90%+ match, you really don't know yourself very well. Finally, if you take the assessment too seriously you have failed to grasp the concept of generality.

Hmmmm..
Internal Medicine - Hematology 96% Personality Match
Pediatrics 93% Personality Match
Preventative Medicine - Public Health and General 92% Personality Match
Preventative Medicine - Aerospace 91% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology 90% Personality Match

Actually pretty right on as I'm thinking Hem/Onc....but def not peds and I don't even know about Preventative Medicine?? At my practice now that's all MPH's and not really my cup of tea...oddly specific too, Aerospace? How did they know I love planes??

Bottom 3 right on too...rectal surgery and urology...no thanks

Colon and Rectal Surgery 72% Personality Match
Urology 70% Personality Match
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 69% Personality Match

Emergency Medicine = 96% Match

Hell yeah.

So you're saying we should take te quiz and either choose 10 or 0? Well, what if the truth really is a 5? Lol.
Doesn't matter anyway. This was to see if it matched up with what you already are interested in.

Yes, that's correct. These types of assessments don't take into account "5's" because the question is only correlated with a certain answer or speciality. The specialities may have several questions that fit with them, but there is no speciality associated with a "5" or a "3" or "7" and so (you get the idea).

If someone is taking the assessment for a reason more significant than just to waste time, it should matter to you because if you choose answers in the middle for many of the questions your results aren't actually telling you anything you can actually go on. If you believe there may actually be a correlation between the questions, your answers, and a particular speciality, then it matters that you take the assessment properly.

Third time taking a quiz like this... results eerily similar.

Peds 80%
Derm 73%
Psych 71%
IM Oncology 70%
Dx Rads 70%

[Fields that I'm particularly interested in that didn't make the top 5: PM&R 70%, IM 66%, Family Practice 65%]

I remember the last time I took this, Peds was in the top 5 and I was surprised. Never saw myself as a doctor for children/teens (in fact, I was biased towards IM because no kids and I work well with adults/geriatrics). But then I asked my classmates and they were like "yeah, I could see you doing peds. you seem like you'd be able to work great with kids." So now I'm kinda thinking twice.

Peds is my number 2 according to that thing. Id straight up kill myself if I had to do peds. I wouldn't put too much weight into it. I did get a 100% for rads, though. I should've done rads.

My new results ( choosing either 10 or 0)

The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure I picked love time off and not working hellishly long hours. Lol

Radiology Diagnostic
Urology
Psychiatry
Dermatology
Preventative Medicine -Aerospace

Those were my top 5. An interesting list. Especially aerospace.

1) Gen Surg 90%
2) Neurosurg 89%
3) Allergy & Immun. 89%
4) Plastics 88%
5) Optho 88%

Very surprised as EM (personal top choice) wasn't in top 10, and I've never really considered surgery (cz, yanno, i'd like to have a life). Quite informative nonetheless!

1. Anesthesia 81% (wow, this is actually my top choice)
2. Radiology - Diagnostic 79%
3. Obstetrics and Gyn 79% (wuuuuuut... no thanks)
4. Pathology 75%
5. Urology 74%

2, 4, and 5 are choices I've never even thought about!

Pathology is awesome. You should look into it, hah

1. Dermatology @ 85%
2. Internal Medicine - Gastroenterology @ 83%
3. Surgery - General @ 82%
4. Psychiatry ??? @ 82%
5. Pediatrics @ 82%

I've always wanted to be a Derm. This quiz is scaryyy

1. Internal medicine- oncology
2. Internal medicine- pulmonary disease
3. Surgery- general
4. OBGYN

hmmm...

2014-01-17_07h33_56.png

I am pretty sure my personality is placing me on a path where I will cry a lot in a corner for the rest of my life. SMH, but I do love oncology. Don't know what in the world is Preventative Med???

Bottom 3:
  1. Urology
  2. Neurological Surgery (-sniffles-)
  3. Plastic Surgery (THANK GOODNESS!)

Well I'd have to say that this quiz was pretty much spot on for me: I am heavily leaning towards surgery (particularly gen surgery) but I am also leaning towards EM which was still 91% match...It got me right for the top and bottom because I could never be a primary care physician...the quiz was crazy accurate for me

Top three:
1) Thoracic Surgery (96%)
2) Neurosurgery (95%)
3) General Surgery (94%)

Bottom three:
1) Family Practice (74%)
2) Pediatrics (77%)
3) Psychiatry (78%)

Emergency Medicine
Oncology
Diagnostic Radiology
Orthopedic Surgery

I am applying to med school in June and I am currently working as a paramedic so Emergency Medicine being number 1 made me smile a little and Orthopedic Surgery is also something that I think would be pretty awesome though I'm looking at starting residency in 2019 assuming I get in this year so thats still a while away.

Top 3
1. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 93%
2. Preventative Medicine- occupational 91%
3. Internal Medicine- Hematology 90%

Bottom 3
1. Ophthalmology 82%
2. Family Medicine 82%
3. Emergency Medicine 82%

First, I really never new Physical Medicine was a Doctors field always thought it was PTs. Second, as of right now I am interested in doing an EM/IM residency and then Cardiology fellowship. Third, I still have 4 years until I match so a lot can change and who knows maybe the survey will be right?!

1. EM
2. IM- gastero
3. General surgery
4. Plastic surgery

It's funny because I wanted to be a plastic surgeon for the longest time. I recently lost interest in it a year ago.

I want to be an anesthesiologist or EM,
But was surprised anesthesiology was at the bottom of this list.

Interesting results though
