yea, i thought that was a bit messed up when she told me too, but the secretary was being so kind, that I didn't want to question her judgement.

So the phone coversation went like:
ME: "Hello, my name is USeF and I'm one of the student that have been placed on the waitlist. If possible, could I speak to Dean Curtiss or anyone else that could tell me what would better help my application, an additional letter of rec, updates on my activities or a letter of interest."

her:"NO, you can't speak to him.. *we both laugh nervously* but I CAN try and answer some of your questions... umm, First of all, you can send anything you feel would be helpful *thanx for the cliche answer and it will all be added to your file. I can't say specifically what date they will start looking your file again."

ME:"alright, well from what you know, is the waitlist ranked and when do they start pulling from it?"

her: "yes it is ranked and I can't tell you where you are. They will start offering acceptances from the waitlist in June and will continue up to the date classes start."

ME: *baffled and perplexed by this peice of info"thanks for your help. have a great day."

June? you kidding me? How could they possibly wait until that long unless they really do make offers to 200 and wait for those to decline.
As I may be travelling in the summer, this really changes things for me..

I think the reason they wait until June is b/c they actually give people the last 2 weeks of May to send in their checks which hold their spots. I don't know why it's not the usual May 15th date--AMCAS maybe? That's frustrating you couldn't get a better answer!

Well.... that sucks.... but thanks for letting us know what you found out. I was also placed on the waitlist and Pitt is my #2 choice.... so waiting until June could be painful. Hopefully... my #1 (which I am on the waitlist for too) will offer me a spot before then so the torture can stop.

I think you will find that for most schools, waitlist movement doesn't really START until the end of May, early June. Actually, last year, it was apparently a very unusual year and most schools didn't start seeing a lot of movement until mid-June.

My personal theory is that most schools wait until at least the May 15th "deadline" to get a good idea of how many spots they may have to fill, total. This may then influence their "ranking" of waitlisted applicants, based on gender, ethnicity, state of residence, etc.

My friend was pulled from the Pitt waitlist last year two days before our graduation. May 22nd. So, you could hear a little earlier than the beginning of June. He had connections to the admissions office though, so he knew he was 4th on the WL.

I spoke to Linda (director of admissions) a few days ago, and she said that they do not tell us our position on the waitlist...

Also, she said that they will review the waitlist in "early June" and if accepted, they will call or email us...
