HELP:

I really liked pitt, but have ~60k in undergrad debt, so I'm leaning towards a suny school. My decision is complicated by the fact that I am definately interested in competitive sub specs.

There is a very good chance that I won't be at the top of the class at the suny school.

My passions at the moment are in areas that I probably won't have access to at suny.

an MD is an MD, but what weight to res directors place on brand name applicants?...it must be less than applying for med school in the first place.

thanks

In most cases I would say take SUNY over the private med school, however given that the Pitt program stongly interests you, that it has a top reputation then the extra money is likely worth it.You can do the most competitive things from any SUNY as well but it will be easier for a middle of the class student from Pitt.

Desmond,
You probably should take a closer look at which schools have better programs in the specific areas you are interested in. Sounds like SUNY doesn't have exactly what you are looking for. Pitt is known for a number of things including transplant surg and ortho. If you are looking for surgery or any of the surgical subspecialties, you are probably better off at Pitt. Take a look at the match lists for each school this year, it will give you a rough estimate as to the competitiveness as viewed by residency program directors. Take this with a grain of salt as there is a great degree of self selection; someone with <200 on step 1 is not likely going to apply to derm or ortho or rad onc.

Also consider research opportunities at each place. You want to be sure you have all the opportunities available to you at your med school of choice.
