What do you do when you see your classmate cheats?

A. Who cares? It's their style, their brain.
B. Report on them.
C. Want to throw up because it's so disgusting
D. Go have a small talk to them

Also, what's the dental school policy about cheating?

Actually, I've never seen any of my classmates cheat. Maybe it's because they know I'm pretty uptight about stuff like that. Or maybe it's because my school has a zero tolerance, zero mercy policy when it comes to academic dishonesty.

~8 students didn't graduate last year for plagiarism on one little 50 pt. paper. 😱

BTW, my guess is that dental schools kind of frown on cheating. I mean, I've never heard of them passing out cribbed notes for exams or anything. 😉

That's not gonna crimp your style too much is it, Tink?

Given our flawed education system, the best grades and opportunity goes towards efficient, but not necessarily intelligent and hardworking, students. Chances are you never or rarely saw your antisocial nerd peers succeed in getting the highest grades or being picked for popular programs.

The ones getting all the honors and acceptances are the students who have:

1) testing taking skills
2) connections with profs and TAs
3) a network of friends who provide each other info, and that includes answers to homework/lab questions.

Clearly, our education system is all about getting the highest grades, not necessarily by how much you really know and how hard you worked.

So I'm going to have to disagree with you guys on this, by saying that it's not cheating unless you get caught. Paradoxically, cheating without getting caught might itself be a display of skills and shrewdness in their own way.

Again, I know that cheating is wrong but, due to our educational model and the competitiveness of society, if the ends justify the means, then I really can see nothing wrong with it from the individual's standpoint.

Do you know why Asian car/electronics companies are so successful? They keep imitating and reverse-engineering US-designed products. The reason why they keep eating US companies' lunch isn't because they are any brighter. So there you go, and there are many other fine examples.

Whoah there, Logistical. I think you're gonna struggle a little with the professional ethics courses with an attitude like that. Cheating is wrong whether you get caught or not.

I'll admit that it isn't always the most cerebral individuals who are on the top of the heap. I graduated top of my class and I know TONS of people who were both smarter and harder working than me.

You are right that:
I have an unusual ability to do well on tests - especially essay tests. But isn't that a worthy skill?
I'm not afraid to ask professors with help when I need it, but it's not like they're giving me answer keys or anything. Most professors will come and help anybody who comes and asks.
I did have lots of friends hooking me up with old notes and tests. But I NEVER used old tests and quizzes unless I had express permission from the professor to do so. And I always share with anyone who asks.

These things you listed are important skills in the real world and there's nothing wrong with them being a component of the grading system. The smartest man in the world is worthless to society if he doesn't know how to interact with other people to make his ideas known and build on the work of others.

But cheating/lying/stealing is wrong regardless of how proficient you are at it. 😉

If the prof. specifically says that he/she wants you to work individually, you better write your own paper.
If they say keep your eyes on your paper during your test, and not talking, then it's wrong to look at other ppl paper and talk.

I don't care what ppl do with their connection (TA & prof.) Go find old tests and study outside....At least be a little moral in the test room.

once i was taking an upper div. science seminar class, there were about 35 students in there, the class was very cool in the sense that everyone was involved with the lecture and discussion, the professor was very lenient to the group....

anyways, these two girls in my class, they talked about applying to dental school and how much they love this one private school in CA, then on interview date, i saw one of the girl there, thank goodness she was not in my group on that interview day,

anyways, during the final for that class, those two girls sat infront of me, and they were cheating on the final, they were looking at each other's scantrons, and tapping their fingers to signal A or B or C!!!!!

I was outraged! I know people cheat, but to make it that obvious right infront of me or other students???? the subject of the class was difficult, but just because the prof. has been so nice and cool and assumed the best of every student there, such as having only one form of exam, everyone can sit close to each other, etc...

anyways, 10 minutes into the test and they keep signalling and I had to go up to the prof, ask to talk to him outside, and he moved them about 5 min later, including other kids who were sitting too close to each other, just so that these two girls didn't stand out, anyways, i was sooo disappointed and I was sooo mad because they cheated and they were so obvious and they were seniors! and they bragged about their grades all the time, lame assssssessss😡

i cannot believe the professor did not fail them, after he caught them signaling each other with those ugly fingers of theirs!!!😡
