When would be the last date to take the step II and be considered for interviews? Since the dean's letter go out on the Nov. 1, do I need to take it before Oct.? I was scheduled to take it this Friday, but I really need to postpone to study more. Please help!

Well, I guess the first (and perhaps only) question is, "how long are score reports taking to come back?" If its less than 1 month and you allow a couple of weeks for ERAS to upload the scores to your file, then you might make it by beginning of November (bear in mind that while your scores are sent early to ERAS there still exists some turn around time). So leave yourself long enough for these things to happen.

The other option is that you can FAX scores yourself to programs you've applied to, since after the deadline there is no guarantee that they will download extra information in your file after that date. But they *may* look at information YOU send them directly. At least that's what I did.

Thank you sooo much for your reply, Kimberli.

I just panicked and cancelled my test date. 🙁

So, if I take the step 2 by mid-October, assuming the score report takes 4-5 weeks, the programs will get the score sometime in November. Is that too late to be considered for interviews? I don't have a great step I score. Also, programs will be able to download info from ERAS till Dec., right? Or is it Nov. 1? 😕

Thanks again, for your help!

The scores are supposed to take 4-6 weeks to arrive in your mailbox...mine took around 6 weeks, but I've heard others coming back in 4.

First...please relax. Step 2 really isn't that hard. I found it much easier than Step 1.

Secondly,I think programs can continue to download stuff from ERAS all through the interview season (not sure what the deadline is). I'm fairly sure they can download stuff after the deadlines (which are different for each speciality and sometimes programs) but some programs choose not to - ie, there is no guarantee that stuff you upload after the deadline will ever be seen by a program. The Dean's letter isn't downloaded until November 1.

if you don't have a great Step 1 score this is all the more reason for you to do well on Step 2 (which I suspect you know already - hence the panic) and get those scores in. Bear in mind that some programs may not pay you much attention with your Step 1 score, some programs will not look at apps without a Step 2 score and that your application can only be improved by having a Step 2 score. Can't you find enough time to study in the next couple of weeks to get it done? I know the program deadlines are November 1, but you may still be able to send stuff as it becomes available.

I'm starting an away rotation next week, so I doubt that I will have enough time to study... But the way I look at it now is that I'm screwed either way :'(

Since I only have a mediocre Step 1 and don't have a step 2 score, should I not apply to more competitive programs till later? Does earlier app the better still apply to surgery programs?

Thanks again.

Frankly, I never believed in the "early application, the better" idea. Programs meet at various times and often it may be as infrequent as once a month to review applications as a team. Therefore, in such cases (although admittedly every two weeks is probably more common) it doesn't make a hill of beans difference if your app was in the first of the month or the end, it gets evaluated in the same pile as everyone else. The early application "wisdom" comes from the belief that if you apply early, your application looks better because they haven't had as much to compare you with. However, programs have been evaluating candidates for years, so they know what looks good and what doesn't.

Now, that being said, you cannot submit applications after the November 1 deadline and it appears that even if you took Step 2 today, your scores may not be available before that date. This may very well hurt you at some programs if your Step 1 score is poor. If you are planning on sending in your Step 2 scores after the November 1 deadline, contact the programs to make sure they will accept it and evaluate it along with the rest of your app.

More competitive programs are more likely to want to see your Step 2 score, so it would behoove you to have your scores available to them. But again, you can't apply after November 1 (in some cases, October 15), and they may not accept your Step 2 scores after that date.

What's done is done - if you were worried about Step 1, Step 2 should have been taken this past summer. But can't change that now. Contact programs and ask if they will accept additional material (ie, Step 2 score) after the deadlines. If they won't, you'll have to decide if you still want to apply, whether or not your Step 1 is competitive.

Disagree with the above. The radiology director at a top 20 school has personally told a friend of mine that they stop looking at applications by mid october because there are just too many at that point.

That may be true at that particular program, I happen to know it isn't at ours and a couple of others I worked at before medical school (at least one of which was a "Top 20" school as well). Maybe Rads at a Top 20 school can afford to stop looking at applications early because they have more than enough qualified candidates to fill their spots. Now that Surgery is getting more competitive, perhaps we too can stop looking at all the applications because we are simply drenched with them.

So, lets split the difference and say that if the deadline is November 1, then your app should be in by mid-October to avoid anyone mistaking your file for a coaster.
