i'm goin to d.o. school next year and i'm scared that if i choose surgery as a career, that i'm not going to be able to go into it because of my degree. this is very discouraging and i'm starting to have second thoughts about going d.o. please help!

You can be a surgeon. With that, I strongly recommend you limit your reliance on SDN with regards to competition, statistics, etc. On the whole, the consensuses may be reliable, but it's easy to get caught up in the unreliable nit-picking. It is competetive, no doubt. But do well in years 1 and 2 and do not make your final decision on a specialty till the end of year 3.

You'll be going to my school, and I would absolutely love to help you in any way I can through the years. PM me if you want.

thanks rita, lets keep them comin!

You know, there are DO surgical residencies. And, many went unmatched this year because general surgery is not popular in DO crowd. Just need to research the programs and see which are good and which are not. The best way to do that: Call the program and ask to talk to their residents.

By the way, the atrition rate in general surgery is high. You can always try to transfer into an open MD program during the middle of your surgical residency.
