Poor GPA (cGPA 3.388 sGPA 3.132), 29T MCAT, Good ECs

Applying this summer, and basically wondering if it is even worth applying MD, and if so, which schools I should target. It looks like I am below the 10th percentile for most MD schools, and I figure that <10% might be mostly reserved for URM students. Also considering SMPs.

GPA: 3.388 (MD), 3.504 (DO)
Science GPA: 3.132 (MD), 3.264 (DO)

MCAT Score: 29T (8P 10V 11B)
California resident, non-URM. Most pre-reqs taken at community college after getting my B.A. in Fine Art at UCSC.

No research, and shadowing is limited to surgery.

Volunteer:

2003 Volunteered for “Best Buddies,” program that paired college student with special needs adult for 1 on 1 social outings.

TIME: 3 hrs/wk for 2 quarters.

2011 Volunteered at the Emergency Room for UC Davis, patient intake, front desk, cleaning etc.

TIME: 6 months, 4 hours/week.

2011 Volunteered at the Pediatric Emergency Department for UC Davis. Blood running, minor help with restraint, taking patients to CT, etc.

TIME: 4 months, still attending, 4 hours/week.

Internship:

2010 UCD Pre-Medical Surgical Program. Included shadowing, clinical rotation, surgery observation in all specialties, plus classroom/academic component. Graduated with an A.

TIME: 5 month program, 7-30 hours/week.

2010 EMT Internship- 10 hour shift at Mercy Methodist Hospital. Started 5-lead EKGs, took vitals, restocking, etc.

TIME: 1 10 hour shift

Tutoring:

2005-2007 Writing Tutor for UCSC. Promoted to Group Tutor for Honors Writing within a quarter.

TIME: 2 Years, 14/hrs week.

2011- Present Became an “At Risk” Tutor for foster, homeless and probation youth. Very involved job, constant communication with social workers, teachers, foster parents, group homes, etc.

TIME: 1.5 years, 31 hours/week.

Related Work Experience:

2006-Present Joined Camp Arroyo as a counselor. Attended three day (72 hour) session camps where you are paired with a special needs child and do activities with them.

TIME: Multiple 72 hours sessions.

2008-2009 Hired by Advance Kids as an applied behavioral anaylsis Tutor. Trained in ABA and PECS. Worked with children diagnosed with autism, ran discrete training trials and translated data.

TIME: 30 hours/week, 1 year.

2009-2010 Hired by Natomas Unified School district to be an instructional assistant for a child with autism. Worked in group and one-on-one. Attended individual learning plan meetings with special education staff.

TIME: 30 hours/week, 1.5 years.
