Hello guys!

I am taking a 1st year English literature summer course right now and received D- on my first assignment which is worth 5% of the term, and D on my midterm which is worth 20% of the term. The whole course lasts for a month, and I still have another week left before my final!!! At the moment, I estimate that I will end up getting around C(60%) to B-(68%) range 😕

My overall average is 78.74% which is about 3.2 atm. After taking this course, my overall GPA will drop dramatically. Now, I am so worried that I am screwed for Dental school! I think I am digging a hole for myself!!

Will getting a C in english affect my chance of getting in Dental school (private ones) "dramatically" ?? It worries me even more knowing english is one of pre-req for Dental school. 😱 😕 😕 Help!!! I need all the advices/encouragments I can get!!! :scared:

The reason that I am doing so bad in this course cuz the summer course is so condensed and I have a full time job at the same time. And I have one of hardest English profs in the English department!! I never receive D on any of my assignment/tests b4 :eek I know english is not my strongest subject but I did pretty well on my last english course (B). I feel so depressed right now! :scared: Looks like I am digging myself a deep hole and my chance of getting in Dental school right after undergad is getting really really small :scared: I decide to quit my job to focus on this course.

Thanks guys as always!

don't stress over it too much, although you should try to get the best grade possible. What you need to do is whatever you lack in, you gotta make up for in the sciences, and show the admissions committee that your sciences are strong, and an occassional C is not that bad...

A C in English!!! OH MY GOD.... It's over... just give up now. J/K, you'll be fine

yeah don't worry about it. I got a C+ in my english class, and I still gotten into most of the school I applied to.

If you have low grade in an English class, you need to do better in the RC section of the DAT.

thanks for all the encouragement. I am not saying I am gonna to give up. 🙂

I am just worried that adcom will really frown on my mark in English, and that will put me in disadvantage when I apply 🙁

Naw, i dont think the C in english is gonna do you in....if you also bomb the RC portion of the DAT, then some questions of your english capability may arise (especially if you misspell on your application like you did on your username...hahahahha...just joking dude, dont flame me)....but I would be more concerned about your GPA....its a decent GPA, but it has no room to fall, and like you said, its gonna fall this year....so dont let your GPA fall that much, if at all....and...YOU MUST DO WELL ON THE DAT...otherwise, your chances will start to fade

I have been using smooth operater in other fourms for 4 yrs now until someone on SDN points out... 🙄

yeah, I am aiming to for over 80% in 2nd yr. I will be taking couple ez courses. I hope that will raise my GPA up abit.

Wow! Where are you so lucky to go to school that a 60% is a C?

As for the grade in the literature class... I can tell you that as a dental student not a day goes by that I don't wish I had worked harder to learn just one more tidbit of trivia about Browning or Keats. The material is so relevant to dental school and to life in general. I mean, how can you expect to fix somebody's smile if you don't know Dickens' birthday or the names and order of each of his wives?

I am attending Univeristy of British Columbia in Canada. This is our grading system.

64-67 C+
60-63 C
55-59 C-
50-54 D

my English prof is really werid, the course is based on life in small town. I find the course pretty interesting. It's just my prof mark so hard on in-class essays.

It depends if the OP has taken, or will take, other English courses to buffer that grade to demonstrate that he/she handle English composition. Let's face it, there are some professors out there that grade with a knife and quick to cut off student's grades. I have had one professor that had a strict policy of never giving a first-time student of his an A, period. Just don't get a C- or a D+, or better yet, focus on getting that B - go for the silver, not the bronze!

yeah, i just don't know how my grades will translate into American GPA when application comes. 🙄 Maybe someone can tell if there's a website where it deal with this problem ? 🙄

Yeah, I am aiming and praying for B- for sure! I need to kick some ass on my next paper which is worth 20% of the term. 😎

Goto the AADSAS website at adea.org and view the online instruction manual, they have a conversion table you can use...

I found out that it's too late to withdraw the course. I am gonna work my butt this upcoming week!!! I just finished writing an essay for this course. Hope you guys can help me proof read it at...

Dr.,
That may be one of the funniest posts i've read in a long time. I laughed my ass off for a bit... good stuff 😎

to the OP, since when is 68% a B-??!! no wonder all you canadians have such high GPA's. here in the states you need at least an 80% for a B- and at my school the general number is 82%. man, maybe i should have done my undergrad work in canada.

yeah, it's werid, but i think there's a guidline outta there to convert GPA so the applicants will be on the same playing field.
