Hello,
I have read a lot of the threads and am still combing through all the information.
I will try to keep this very brief. I took my science classes over 10 years ago. This included the basics as well as some advanced because they were required for my Biology major. I got mainly C's and D's. All the D's I retook and got C's. Math classes are A's and B's. Did not finish the biology degree because I could not pass Physics, got depressed and gave up. (I may go back and finish the degree if I can just for self-gratification.) Different life challenges occurred and along the way I completed an Associate's Degree in a non-science related major and will be finishing a Bachelor's in May in a non-science major. My cumulative gpa right now is 3.471 at my present university. I did a rough calculation of my science gpa and it is 1.8 or 1.9. I struggled with my science classes in the past because I was not ready, did not know how to study, took on too much at one time, did not have a good foundation when I started college, did not have any guidance, and had other issues that contributed to my poor grades.
I have been looking into post bacc programs and have emailed two so far about whether I can apply since I have taken all the science prerequisites. One school emailed me back and said that I could apply for both their post bacc and SMP programs. Prior to that I had not considered an SMP because I figured if I did not do well in the past, it made more sense to take the classes again and rebuild my foundation. I have also never taken the MCAT. I feel that at the very least I need a refresher in the sciences and could probably do well in an SMP program after that. But I am not sure the best route to take at this point. I am 33, (will be 34 in 2 days), an URM, live in Maryland and have worked in healthcare for over 10 years, both paid and volunteer work: hospitals, EMT, patient care tech, counselor, medical administrative specialist, rehabilitation counselor, residential counselor, ER Unit secretary, tutored (math..I'm really good with math), etc. I know my focus should be on my academics and MCAT. I just included the other information in case that helps someone give me feedback.
