OK, I wanted to start a thread for pre-interview, ON HOLD STATUS .....not post-interview on hold status. This is not the same as ON HOLD Post interview ...only pre-interview. as of today, I am in the following categories and I have not had an interview yet. I am wondering if others have also been placed in similar categories. Nowhere in any AAMC medical school guide is such a category described, but I wanted to also see how common it is for such categories. I appreciate as much input as possible...thanks, and best of luck to all prospective medical students entering the 2004 class!!!

1. Chicago Medical Finch University of Health Sciences -- "POSSIBLE INTERVIEW CATEGORY" -- as quoted from the admissions person upon my phoned status check on Jan. 12, 2004.

2. Drexel University College of Medicine -- UNDECIDED CATEGORY -- quoted from admissions person during a phoned in status check, Dec. 2003<note: I did not interview yet... this is all pre-interview/post-secondary>

3. Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine -- "CONTINUE TO REVIEW CATEGORY" -- letter received via snailmail on Dec. 26, 2003.

**ALSO, it would be nice if anyone can confirm a 2004 rejection (post secondary but pre-interview) from the above medical schools -- i'm just curious if all rejected applicants are first placed in this category to ease the pain. If anyone has already gotton a rejection, then we can conclude that these are real and meaningful categories with true interview potential ...plus it'll make me feel somewhat hopeful.

yeah im on preinterview hold at albany, penn st, vcu, and uci.

im just gonna chalk these up as rejections since i figure since they prolly have a lot more applications to choose from, they prolly dont need to have me as a back up for interviews.

I am so glad to see I am not the only one with this annoying status......which gets more frustrating as we get closer to March! 😡

I am on hold at PSU, USUHS, and......Temple

PSU reported that they are interviewing up to March 31.....but have already sent out early March invites.....apparently they forgot to send out mine.....

USUHS reported that those of us in this category should hear something soon, they should be done reviewing applications on hold in about 1.5 weeks......

Temple.....well.....was told to just wait....and wait.....and wait some more....as if I have been doing something different

If it makes you feel better all three of these schools have sent out pre/post-secondary (but pre-interview) rejection letters....I am starting to think that hold means 'we will hold your rejection letter till March'. :meanie:

What I want to know.....is there anyone who has been on pre-interview hold but then eventually got an interview?? An acceptance?? Isn't funny how schools use you as a back-up also??? 😕

One of my holds has recently turned into a rejection: Upstate

I am still on hold at Downstate and Albany, although I am sure that I will be receiving a rejection from them in the near future.

on hold at GWU - they said they would be reviewing apps again this month, hopefully i'll get an interview out of it. probably not 🙁

Yeah i'm on pre-interview hold at George Washington..... if only they knew that I am going to make such an excellent physician!

talk2me - I got a rejection from Finch, so I know they don't put everyone into the possible interview category!

How did you get a hold of someone at Drexel to tell you your status? I fear I may be in the same category as you since I haven't heard a peep from them since right after they got my Aug. MCAT scores. Every time a call, I just get a message to send an email. So far I seem to be sending emails into the abyss...

I also have not had an interview at the following schools, but have not been rejected. I have been told the following:

Loyola: We will re-review your file in March, but don't worry, we interview until April. (Might as well just reject me!)

Rush: Call next friday (I called and they asked me why I was calling since my status was still "under review")

Drexel: Your file has been reviewed and no decision has been made.

Temple: No decision has been made.

GW: A decision has been made about your file. You should get something in the mail in 3-4 weeks. (That was 3-4 weeks ago and I have heard nothing.)

SLU: No decision has been made.

Tufts: Your file is in review.

Basically I have no information that is useful. What does all of this mean? I guess not being rejected outright is good, but this limbo since mid-October is getting pretty old.

I really hope this isnt true, but the lady from Einstein told me that they can tell when they pull up your file if you will get an interview or not, but most places will simply tell you that youre in a "interview pool." She was a little snide about it, so maybe she was simply in a bad mood and it isnt true...I hope so b/c that describes my status at a bunch of schools.

I know what you mean. I have only had 2 interviews (a third scheduled) but only 3 rejections. I am waiting on all the rest. ~6 schools.

Although I did apply pretty late.

i'm on pre-interview hold at tufts, nymc, jefferson, finch, wright st., temple, gwu, njms, & penn st. i've had 2 interviews so far, and a few (expected) post-secondary rejections.

the way i look at it is: i have not been rejected by the above schools, so it's a positive!

GW: Your application is currently being (re)-reviewed. You should hear something in 3 weeks or so.

Loyola: We've already reviewed your file twice and decided to throw it back into the pile. It will come up again at the end of February.

At least they had the decency to let me know I've been reviewed and thrown back rather than just saying "It's currently under review, good-bye."

You can add U of Louisville and Ohio State to that list.

I only have one interview (pending) and no acceptances yet- so I'm really hoping they aren't just dragging me along...

has anyone had luck calling NYMC about their status? or are you just going on what your status page says...

when i called, they told me i was still under review, and asked why i don't just look at the status page.

also, they said that they interview into april-may. i'm guessing that interviews this late would be for waitlist spots.

What is the link for the NYMC status page?

The only thing worse than being rejected is being on the waitlist all summer long.

hey guys,
i got an interview invite from nymc two weeks ago and their earliest interview date is march 31st! i also got an invite from albany and their earliest date is april 28th! these dates are ridiculously late and i wonder if i'm just interviewing for a waitlist spot?

i am also on pre-interview hold at UCI and i'm thinking of writing a letter of interest?

I'm on hold at Penn State and Albany.

So has anyone ever actually gotten an interview from this category? Luckily, I'm not sweating over them, but it would be interesting to know.

Call back often, you will definitely get a cancellation spot this late as people have acceptances already. I just got an interview from one of those schools and jumped into such a spot. Good luck.

Thanks for all replies everyone!!!! MNgrrl: i understand your frustration. i actually talked to a real person @drexel when i phoned in ....sometime in early november. that's when she informed me that i was on the "UNDECIDED CATEGORY". since then, i have been checking in via phone and e-mail, but no reply or real person is available. as others have mentioned, there's an answering machine that tells you to inquire about status via e-mail which is not responsive.

i guess i still have a slight chance @finch since they sent rejections to others whereas they informed me that i was placed in the POSSIBLE INTERVIEW CATEGORY.

i'm currently waiting to hear from over 21 more schools (already heard the worst from 10 others).

by the way, has anyone applied to duluth in MN? i was rejected from twin cities, MN, but duluth sounds pretty good. i'm still under review by the admissions committee. there were only 440 applicants in 2003 (total applicant pool), but the catch is, only 1 out of state matriculant. susan is so nice when u call for a status check unlike all other admissions people.

so anyone experience rude admissions people? albert einstein, rush, and wright state are among the top rudest admissions people.

please update this thread regarding the original post....i.e. on hold pre-interview status.

thanks and best of luck to all!!!

talk2me - are you out of state? if so, are you from a rural area? do you want to go into rural medicine? unfortunately, if you are out of state and not from a rural area, your chances aren't good (sorry, I'm not trying to be mean!) Although they have a small applicant pool, their class size is also small (around 50), and they are mainly from people from rural MN, WI, ND etc. I did not apply to Duluth because I know several people who in past years were immediately accepted to UMN Twin Cities, but were rejected immediately from Duluth. It seems that it would be easy to get in because the averages (MCAT and GPA) are quite a bit lower than for most other schools, but they are very selective in the applicants they take based on where they are from and what their future goals are (even MN residents from Mpls aren't in a good position to get in).

But, if you have made it this far and haven't been rejected - no news is definitely good news - theytend to outright reject people they really aren't considering!

bump; anyone heard from gw lately?

Hi MErc44 i've been calling Drexel Medical School Admissions and always get a recording. Can you provide the phone number that you've been using? So when you called, were they willing to give you an update on your status?

thanks

9215) 991-8202. The only time i got a message was over christmas break. I know you aren't forgetting about the time difference or maybe you are from the east coast so I don't know what to tell you. I got accepted and have since called that number twice and spoken to someone.

I understand your frustration. But there is hope. My dream came true and i'm finally getting my first med school interview at Chicago Medical Finch University of Health Sciences ... I'm so excited! I was previously placed in the "possible interview category", and was contacted a couple of weeks ago. This interview invite is somewhat late in the interviewing season, but do you think these late interviews are for a waitlist or possibly for immediate acceptance?

thanks for the info.

by the way I just got an interview at finch. It was sent out on the 22nd of february but it took 9 days to get to my dads house. It's pretty scary to think that some schools might send invites that get lost in the mail and you would never know. USPS is worthless.

talk2me when are you interviewing? i am there on 4-22.

I got a letter from them today - they said they are no longer inviting people for interviews, but that my app was put in a small group of people who may have their files reopened this summer for more interview invites (although that chance is very slim). So basically it's a rejection, but they didn't actually say that. So annoying! I'd rather just get a straight answer from them, even if it is a rejection.

any recent updates on the above schools you mentioned? i'm also hearing the same thing when i call slu, tufts, temple, and RUSH ...hahaha, that's so funny b/c that's the same exact thing rush told me ...they're very rude. also, beware of wright state...kind of hostile there as well.

elizabeth,
sorry to hear the news. hopefully they do reopen files this summer ...they do have one of the larger classes of most medical schools (approx. 185 matriculants expected for the 2004 entering class). i'm waiting to hear from quite a few more schools ...hoping for an interview. are you waiting to hear back from other schools? best of luck with this arduous process.

Elizabeth-

I was placed in that slim pile as well. I definitely agree that they should just interview us or reject us. This process of going from the applicant pool to the pre-interview hold pool to the slim chance of an interview pool is just annoying.

Here is the new news on my status, which unfortunately has not changed much.

I was finally rejected from Jefferson via snail mail a few weeks ago. They assured me that they received many applications this year and could not take the time to interview everyone. Well... I feel much better knowing that.

Tufts - I am still "in review." Apparently in could take until the 2nd week in April to finish this extensive reviewing, but they assured me that they interview until the end of April.🙄

Drexel: I have not been able to reach by phone after several attempts. I emailed a long time ago and was never answered. I will try the phone number given above later.

SLU: Their line has been busy for the last few weeks. They answered my email and said I was still under review.

Loyola: My file will be re-reviewed in March.

Rush: I have not called since the last incident since I can pretty much guess what they will say.

That is the scoop on my situation. I am spending most of my free time studying for the MCAT because it does not look very good for this year. Wait, what am I applying for again? It's been so long I think that I have forgotten. One foot in front of the other...

Some people in this discussion asked if there was anyone that was put on pre-interview hold and then taken off of hold status and given an interview. That is what happened for me at both GW and MCV/VCU. I was on hold at both those schools for an interview. I received a letter from GW about an interview approximately one month later. My impression is that GWU gets a lot of applicants (approximately 10,000 or so), and they only interview about 900 any given year. When I interviewed there they said that they were going to interview to end of March, so those on pre-interview hold may still have a chance. However, I know when you call GW Office of Admisisons they do not tell you anything on the phone, and they do all their invites via snail-mail (which as we all know takes FOREVER).

As for MCV/VCU I was put on hold and then offered an interview 2 days later..very strange. I know VCU ranks people, assign values to them, and then interview people 1-600 lets say, if your number comes up on the computer they invite you. I do not think they do re-review of applications.

Good luck to all, hopefully there will be some people getting late interviews. At least if you interview late you will hear quickly.

Hey all,

I'm on pre-interview hold at Loyola and GW, and still under review at MSSM and Tufts.
It actually happened to me, an interview invite lost that is! Apparently NYMC sent me an e-mail some time in OCTOBER inviting me to interview. I never saw it and was none the wiser until late January when they sent me an e-mail that said "we are assuming you wish to withdraw your application as you never responded to our interview invit." Obviously I called them right up, and they were willing to schedule another interview, but the first slot available was in March. +pity+
Obviously, I would have been totally flipped by the situation, except that luckily I've already been accepted at a school I love.
Best of luck to all. I'm not holding my breath over those pre-interview holds.

celestron,
were you checking your online status page for nymc? it would be even worse if that page didn't reflect the interview invite that you never received!

No, I wasn't even aware that was possible. I probably should have meade more of an effort to find out what my status was at each school, more often; instead once I turned in my secondaries I just focused my attention elsewhere. Anyways, it's a good lesson to learn from for anyone who's just starting the application process.

talk2me, thanks for the sympathy. I'm waiting to hear from a bunch of schools post-interview (the end of March is going to be a nuts time for me), and now after hearing from GW, I only have 1 place I haven't heard from post-secondary. It's annoying how long some of these schools take to tell you anything - it takes a toll on one's sanity!! Anyways, I wish you the best of luck with the process - I hope you hear good news from some of those schools soon! 🙂

Seems that a ton of people were placed in that "slim" pile. So much for slim!! Anyways, I think I'm just going to take it as a rejection and not worry about it anymore. Best of luck with everything! 🙂

any updates from anyone with regard to this thread or anything you would like to share. ???

I think the rejections are finally rolling in. I got mine from GW last week

I still haven't heard from SLU yet. I'm not that bummed (except about the 100 dollar fee), as I am waiting to hear from my state school.
