hi there,
does anybody know anything about the ease of finding a job within an inner-city practice after residency? i'm a 3rd yr med student currently rotating in a federally-funded inner city clinic and i love it. but i'm wondering about availability of jobs in this setting and the pay scale. any info is appreciated...

You shouldn't have a problem at all I wouldn't think, since not many people want to work in such crappy places. It's reassuring that some people enjoy such work because most of us avoid it like the plague.

i wonder. probably b/c of the environment mainly atmosphere of place,type of people. maybe? but i respect the doctors who work in the inner city more than doctors who work in the burbs...

I don't respect them anymore than I do their suburban or rural colleagues, but I do appreciate their choice to fill a spot I wouldn't do for the kind of money that an NBA star pulls in.

And yes, they avoid it because of crappy living conditions (inner city to most people means ghetto or barrio); low pay; high rates of diseases you should try your best to avoid; lots of alcoholics and drug users; a much higher risk of getting mugged; far more ungrateful patients than you get in nicer areas; etc, etc, etc ad nauseum.
