I use both 2.5 and 3.5.
I keep my 2.5 in the car for when I have to go to a different hospital, while I use my 3.5 in the clinic for most 3rds, and root tips. But they are very nice when suturing facial lacs.
But a light is key.

so which would you recommend if you were to pick just one?

I use the tri-head Zeiss operating microscope for exodontia. I tell the neurosurgeons they'll have to wait to do their aneurysm clipping.

Seriously though, I use 2.5x. Helps with my posture.
