I was elected president of my school's pre-dental club and want this to be the best year ever. Do you have any ideas that can help make this year unforgettable besides bringing in specialists to speak, community service, and providing shadowing opportunities?

Thanks!!!

Well, at this point, you should already know what to do...

I would bring a social aspect to the club. Barbecues, pub crawl, intramurals, etc.

We're planning on starting pre-dental study files and peer academic advising this next year as well. I think that will be a big plus in the coming years.

why you want to bring a barbecues, pub crawl? we all got tight schedule...meeting once a week is already a good chance to social.

But I do have a suggestion:idea:: get a online photo book and take picture of everybody and post them on the web with their name under it.

We usually meet once a month..

I agree with Avery! I really didn't like that there was absolutely no social aspect to the pre-dental club at my school. Then at the end of the year we had a mini-banquet type thing and at first it was awkward having to sit at a small table with strangers but looking back on it, it was the only time I got to know anyone in the club and it was pretty fun. It would be nice if you could build a strong community of pre-dents at your school that could support each other. I would have really appreciated that as an undergrad.

We usually go to TGIF after meeting:rolleyes:

Haha see at least you guys did something! Ours was just go to the meeting, sit aisles away from each other, listen to people talk, sign out and leave. Kind of depressing. :D

Lol, our club has about 20 members and they all talk to me but they don't talk to each other. We meet every other week and I like the idea of a barbecue on the weekend or something and pub crawls wouldn't work since about 80% of our club are underage, lol.

Community service always makes it fun.

Have members share their experiences while shadowing. Think of ways to build a good resume, and at the same time thinking about the quality of experiences versus quantity.

Bring food to the meetings. My club used to pay for pizza - I don't know what they do now to bring in members though.

Like others mentioned, don't forget about the social aspect. Engage others with interactive strategies - try to find common ground with members.

lol Don't try too hard to make it an extravagant and exclusive experience. It's nice that you want to bring that, but you'll soon learn that people don't really care. Honestly, those people don't really belong there in the first place. And you really can't make people participate...don't take that the hard way though, because it won't entirely be your fault.

-Some of the dental schools near you might have "open houses". The thing is though, most are not widely publicized so you have to search for the info at each school.
-DAT review sessions with Bio and Chem professors donating time to go over their classes.
-Volunteering events. Look for non-profits that directly apply to dentistry like SmileTrain or something
-If I had more time before applying I would apply to one of the PreMed PreDent outreach programs overseas where you go for two weeks somewhere and assist. One of the guy's who goes to my school just got back from a Mexico trip.
-Cadaver lab
-Email them information about new technology in dentistry and provide them with interesting articles from Dental Journal articles

Try to go visit the near by dental schools. I am from Cal so I am pretty lucky to have visited ALL Cali school plus ASDOH, Midwestern, and UNLV!!! Those were some GREAT trips
