Pre-Med, but would doing an optometry internship be ok?

My brother can't find any opportunity to do clinical volunteering this summer due to the Pandemic. Texas State Optical is hiring interns for the summer, would seizing this opportunity count as clinical volunteering? If not, would it still be a good experience considering it is optometry, even though he is pre-med?

What would the interns be doing exactly? Someone's mentioned this before as working in an optometry clinic and a couple of people said it questions your commitment to medicine.

I know a couple of people that had their sole clinical exposure as pharmacy techs and got in. They were well-rounded everywhere else though.
