I am scheduled to go before before the pre-med committee on Sept. 10th. However, my stats are not that great. only have about a 3.0 overall GPA, and about the same science. I have not yet recieved my MCAT scores yet, so should I have the school send their pre-health committee to DO schools??The reason I am even bothering to go infront of the committee, is that it is practically a pre-req for the Allopathic schools in my state(Louisiana). But I do have the option of only having their reccomendations being sent to only the schools that I want it sent to.

I know a few of the professors on the committee, and have done well in their classes, and my Organic prof who is on the committee, even told me once personally that he believes that I can do well in med school. I am afraid that he, and the other profs who I am in good standings with at this moment, might change their minds after looking at my entire transcript and meeting with others on the committee. Also, I think it might look a little fishy, if I do go before the committee, and only have them send it to the Allopathic schools in my state, and than go back to these profs with whom I am in good standings on the committee with for LORs to the Osteopathic med schools.

So what do you think I should do??Go b4 the comm. and just send their recomendation to the Allopathic schools in my state, and then go back to professors one on one and ask for LORs to send to Osteopathic schools(even to profs who might have been on the committee)? Or should I just send whatever reccomendation the committee gives me to all Osteopaths as well, along with 2 or 3 more LORs(including one from a D.O)?

Tough question.

My feeling is that yes, you should go ahead with this meeting. You will have to convince med school adcoms that depsite your GPA problems, you deserve a chance at med school. So you might as well get some practice by showing the pre-med committee first.

Good luck,
S

I think you should definitely go in front of the committee, especially if you don't feel that your stats are indicative of your ability. After the committee reviews your application and you speak with them, they can help explain and support that you are med school material even if your stats aren't that great. This will allow you to focus more on yourself in your application, as opposed to writing all about why you have low stats because the committee letter may cover that. As for the individual LOR, I'm not sure how your committee works, but at my school we have to submit individual LOR that the committee uses to write up their letter. I don't think it would sound fishy to later ask the committee members for individual LOR, as the individual letters will be more focused to your performance in a class as opposed to an overall picture that the committee writes.

I think you should meet with them...you might blow them away with your charms and really convince them that you can be a doctor...I honestly believe the numbers don't speak for themselves and that you need to meet with the person and get to their core...to truly appreciate their motivation...they might write an encouraging letter after seeing how dedicated you are, and write a letter based on the person, not the numbers.
Best of luck!
Aaaand...I think you're lucky..my committee won't meet with me until they get my MCAT scores back in october 🙁

Since many DO and MD schools require that you use the pre-med committee, I would say go ahead and do the meeting. Your teachers should be supportive of you (if you are attending a good school), and help to address some of your grade issues in their letters. Plus it sounds like you have a good relationship with your science teachers, and that they like you, so I wouldn't worry.

Here's what happened to me:

At my university I have a premed committee but they do not interview you. They only look at your transcripts, GPA, MCAT, Personal Statement, and LORs. I have a 3.3 science, 3.4 overall, 26Q MCAT, regular premed looking EC's/volunteers, nontraditional student working fulltime for past 3 years, went back to school taking extra science courses. So they gave me a Recommendation with Reservations.....I was less than happy since I already sent out secondaries stating I was sending the premed committe letter. Well, I decided not to send it afterall, and sent an email to the schools I had previously sent secondaries too and to schools that required premed committee letters and asked if I could just send out a packet of LORs. All of them said it was fine. So don't give up hope and sometimes it's just best to ask. 🙂 Hope this helps

When you decided to just send individual letters rather than your pre-health comm. recc. did you go back to any of the individuals on the committee?? B/c like I said, a few of my profs that I am close with are on the pre-med comm. at my school, so do you think it might be wierd if I were to go back to them for indiv. LORs after they all collectively gave me a reccomendation(and obviously if I go back to them for indiv. LORs it means that they collectivel gave me a crappy one in the 1st place)

No I didn't b/c none of the people on the committee wrote me LORs. check your pms
