I'm a big fan of motivational quotes. I'm constantly searching them out to inspire me-

So I thought it would be cool to see what quotes premeds find uplifting. My favorite would have to be Edison's:

"Success is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration!"

How about you?

there was a thread on this not too long ago if you do a search.

Isn't it "Genius", not "Success"? I could be wrong.

"Don't suck and you won't get hurt." Brayton Lee

How adcoms probably choose the last few matriculates:

"CALL it!"

Lady Astor to Winston Churchill: "Sir Winston, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink!"

Winston Churchill's Reply: "Lady Astor, if you were my wife, I would gladly drink it!"

Some words to keep you going:

“Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.”

“The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.”

From my chemistry professor: "If one person can think it, any person can think it." (Referring to understanding concepts.)

From my microbiology professor: "You get out of life what you put into it."

Haha, I don't really have motivational quotes, but rather motivational verses. Anyways, two of my favorites are in my sig and I just figured I'd go into a little more detail about them. These verses help me stay confident in myself despite the naysayers. Sorry if it gets long.

"Product of determination, the one who made it through like the sperm that made him, he represents strength like the Black mom who didn't terminate him, but in turn gave him her all.
Now he's discussed in barber shop back rooms, online chatrooms, and in the bathroom on the wall.
Recall, he came from the bottom but the talent God gave him got him by, yall can hate but that only makes him stronger." ~ Jay-Z

"I'm just trying to be me, because there's only one me, strip away the materials I'm serious,
See these things don't make me, nothing can break me, I shine because a star is inside of me...
I'm feeling myself homie what, see I'm a leader you won't show me up... naaah
See they won't slow me down, won't slow me up,
the sky is the limit until I die and I'm in it...
So don't be afraid to show the world who you are,
Go and show the world you're a star,
Reach to the stars go ahead and show the world that it's ours, and then the world will know that a star is inside of me." ~ Joe Budden

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The man who makes a success of an important venture never wails for the crowd. He strikes out for himself. It takes nerve, it takes a great lot of grit; but the man that succeeds has both. Anyone can fail. The public admires the man who has enough confidence in himself to take a chance. These chances are the main things after all. The man who tries to succeed must expect to be criticized. Nothing important was ever done but the greater number consulted previously doubted the possibility. Success is the accomplishment of that which most people think can't be done..

"Let no one be discouraged by the belief there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills—against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence. Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation… It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a billion different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

-Robert Kennedy

And a real simple one: Learn, earn, return.

Oh, and I like this one too, that I heard recently. This guy is the man:

"If you believe in trying to make the best of the finite number of years we have on this planet (while not making it any worse for anyone else), think that pride and self-righteousness are the cause of most conflict and negativity, and are humbled by the vastness and mystery of the Universe, then I'm the same religion as you."

- Salman Khan, founder of khanacademy.org

Khan's videos have been incredibly helpful for the past months that I've used them. Such a great and intelligent guy. His wife is a med student at stanford btw. Can't imagine how uber-intelligent their kids will be.

I know it's not a quote, but I always remember the story of how Michael Jordan didn't make the team the first two times. Imagine, if he had decided to give up and figured he wasn't made for basketball. He would've never been the legendary player he became.

"Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy" - Lao Tsu

Fall seven times, stand up eight.
- Japanese Proverb

“He who depends on himself will attain the greatest happiness.”

“Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.”

I also get inspired by motivational quotes. I also like good stories. I had a music professor who started learning the guitar late into his life (relatively speaking) in his last two years of undergraduate college. After graduating with an econ. and history degrees, he then went on to attain a degree in guitar performance.

I once asked him how often he practiced when he started out. He said to me: "For about 6 years I practiced 8-10 hours every single day. Didn't matter what was going on or even if I was sick. Christmas, Thanksgiving, it didn't matter. I knew that if I was going to make music my profession I had to work that hard."

The guy is amazing, and, even better than that, he is so at ease with who he is. He's somebody who attained what he wanted and loves it everyday.

Oh yeah...for Rocky fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSYtQy9EqTA

Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you, Never gonna make you cry, Never gonna say goodbye, Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Be Content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.

If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you are not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve.

“If you want to succeed in the world, you don't have to be much cleverer than other people. You just have to be one day earlier.”

Two of my favorites that have not been given yet.

"I use what I got
Take what I get
Give Until I ain't got nothin' left
Then I give it some more
Keep on climbing up that mountain
Keep truckin' along, work up a sweat
Pass every no, after no, after no, till I get a yes
I don't worry about what I'm not
I use what I got"
Jason Aldean

"Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend ?til you break
Cause it's all you can take

On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand, yeah, then you stand"
Rascal Flatts

I got excited with the Hov quote but then you turned me off by following up with Joe Budden...tell them ordinary Joes' to Budden' up!

Here's my inspiration. I listen to this motivation tape every day.

But a true champion, face to face with his darkest hour, will do whatever it takes to rise above. A man fights, and fights, and then fights some more. Because surrender is death, and death is for *******. - THE Kenny Powers

Love it. And it's absolutely true. Stats only get you so far.

This isn't a quote but more of a motivational story of the struggle of one young man:

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, and I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air.

In West Philadelphia, born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days. Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool and shooting some b-ball outside of school, when a couple of guys, they were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared, she said, "You're moving in with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air."

I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said "FRESH" and it had a dice in the mirror. If anything I can say that this cab was rare, but I thought, "man, forget it," "Yo home to Bel Air!" I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo homes, smell ya later!" Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air.

...Always get's me up when I'm down. Truly touching.

A doctor friend gave me a motivational piece of advice when I was upset over a grade once:

C = MD
:laugh::laugh:

Is that like a physics equation....or what??

Nope, he meant that you just need to pass to get your MD, you don't have to get A's in everything.

Maybe he meant while in med school? He's a smart guy too and in a competitive residency, so maybe he is onto something
