Hey NON-Trads
I MUST COMMEND ALL of you.

I know it's not dental school yet but I am being seriuosly challenged.

Pre-cals/trig and Chem 1 are my pre-recs now and I'm floundering already. I don't remember a thing I learned about them a decade ago. Right now i'm playing catch up and they r on ch 2. H*E*L*P

Between 9 hrs of f/t work. kids and going to school - I cannot find the time to study.
I wake up at 4.30am go to work , straight to school , straight to taking care of the kids, straight to bed.( oh ya - shadowing 3-5 hrs a week)

I did some studying at work but its on the pre- PRE calc and Pre- chem stuff so I can understand what the F**** they're talking about -

HOW do u all do it and get great grades - by the way I need to get 4.0 b/c my undergrad os like a 2.5 🙁

HELP:scared:

i know this isn't what you want to hear... but i really don't think this is going to happen for you. if you are having a hard time grasping pre-calc and pre-chem, there is no way you can hack dental school. these are high school level courses! also, a 2.5 gpa?! do you have any idea how competitive it is now?

i know i'm going to get a lot of crap for putting you down, but i'm just telling it like it is. you're a single mom with a fulltime job who is struggling with the pre-pre-reqs... i think you need this reality check!

might be the case - but I am determinded. The only reson I'm strug is b/c it's been a long time .. I already have a BS and 1 yr towards a MS. So I am capable AND

VERY DETERMINED!

there is no doubt you are determined! but that doesn't mean you are going to get into dental school. just ask half of the applicants this year how determination worked out for them...

My advice to you would be to work less. You are spending way too much time at your job. I know you probably need to work for your family. Take a look at your current situation and see if you could move somewhere less expensive, or maybe to a relatives. You will need to do well since you have a 2.5 GPA. Find some rich Uncle or Parent and see if they can help you out financially. As for catching up, you can do it, I have seen many people return from a long vacation from college and do very well. But it will require some major sacrafices and hard work. Don't give up if you really want it.

I agree with Utatdent. If you really REALLY want to do this, then you should go for it. But you would have to alter your current lifestyle drastically to accomodate your studying.
Remember, studying increases exponentially AFTER entering into dental school. Doing prereqs right now is a piece of cake in comparison.

Another thought: Maybe you could hold off for now on the shadowing or limit it to every other week. It sounds like you have a ways to go before applying to dental school, and there will be plenty of time to shadow during school breaks, summers, etc... I think the most important focus for you now is your grades. Shadowing can come later.

very true. cut out the shadowing entirely for now. as important as people say it is, i had less than 20 hours and i wasnt even questioned about it!! take full advantage of the weekends for studying and if possible, cut down on the amount of hours you work. i know thats gonna be tough financially, but itll be tough if you pay lots of money to apply and take prereqs and not get in bc of gpa. best of luck to you and dont forget to breathe!!

Well... Im usually the guy giving the reality check but that has been done on another level already... so I would like to offer some advice. Im willing to bet that you had fun in college or just did not apply yourself to your studies. Coming from a "D" avg. in high school, and screwing up the first year and a half of college, I pulled a 3.5 in the end. However, there is no way to do as much studying as you want with everything going on in your life. The previous posts are right. You have to give up the shadowing... for now... since you still have a lot of time for that while you take your pre recs. You may have to cut back on work, and therefore some entertainment. You do seem very determined and that means a lot. The Masters that you are earning is also going to help with the application process because it shows that you are willing to continue to learn. As part of the reality check though, 25 percent of my school claimed to be pre med when they came in as freshmen all the way to senior year. Everyone knows though that 25 percent of a school does not go on. A lot of people do kid themselves. What Im saying is this... try your best... see if you can pull reasonable grades, but if you see that they are dropping from As to Bs or from Bs to Cs... you may want to evaluate your situation. After taking the required Dental School classes, there are many medical careers that you could persue.

Good luck in your journey...
