Hello fellow SDN’ers. As many as you, I have been addicted to SDN ever since I found this website. Another similarity we share is the application process is absolutely nuts! I can’t speak for all of you but the entire process was very stressful, especially after Dec 1st.

Well, I got into D-School and will no longer be a web programmer so I figured I would give a little back to the pre-dents for next year, and to a lesser extent, this year as well. After living on these damn forums for 6 months I noticed that pre-dents are obsessed about certain information. They want to know other peoples stats, where they applied, when they got an interview, where they got accepted, where they are going, when their app was complete, etc, etc…(this list goes on for a mile).

As you know there are several “official” threads on SDN that list all the interviews, all the acceptances, all the people who are going to a particular school, etc, etc. These threads need to be bumped constantly and get all jacked up either accidentally or on purpose by a bored j*$ka$$. In fact, about 50% of all threads and posts deal with this info as the application cycle begins.

So, www.PreDents.com was born. You can see what is it by going to it but just to give you a run down on what it is:

You create a record of yourself. You enter all your statistical data (that is if you want) including DAT, GPA’s, your undergrad school, major, minor, etc. Then you add the schools you applied to. As the application year goes on you can update your record with the status, like when you got an interview, acceptance, rejection, withdraw, etc.

With all this data entered you can view the entire pre-dent situation with amazing detail. Auto generated graphs and charts display what pre-dents want to know about each school they are interested in. You can also cross search between applicants and schools. For example:
You select Harvard. On the Harvard page, all the people who interviewed are displayed. You can then click on an applicant and see their page which lists their “stats” and all the schools they applied to and their status. And so on.

I also am entering base stats for each school so you can rank (actually “sort” is a better word) based on this data. You can rank all schools based on their average DAT, average GPA, number of seats, cost, etc, etc. Most of the data is taken right from the ADEA Guide to Dental Schools.

As of right now, Feb 20, 2006, it is in beta. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it means its not quite 100% complete and may have some bugs that I don’t know about. By people joining up and using it, these bugs show up and then I can fix them.

Please visit the website and mess around with it. To see what it might look like for a particular school, I added about 15 fictitious users and made them apply to UCSF so select that school. Actually, all the CA schools have something to look at.

Hopefully this will answer all the “What are your stats, if you don’t mind” posts and replace all the “Official “ threads.

I hope you all enjoy it and if it gets used, I will add even more charts and graphs and cool things to do.

This was beyond amazing. I am speechless I am so impressed. I wish it had been around when I was applying!!

Nice work!!!

Everybody get behind this website and make a profile! Let's help out the future pre-dental students by giving them a database that will provide them with valuable information.

Good work Pdizzle 🙂

Thanks PDizzle! What a gift! I bet you could even earn some extra $$$ on the side with this website if you wanted to... It wouldn't hurt since you can't really work during dental school. 🙂

Yea man... these are the things I scanned this site for hours trying to find while applying... website looks good so far... nice job

PDizzle, does this mean that you bartend AND are a webdesigner on the side?!' That's amazing. I can totally picture you being a crazy/cool dentist, forcing goblets of alcohol down your patients mouth before you start drilling and filling. And a sweeeeet office with the most high-tech s*** all around.

I added my info! The site looks great!

when are you going to take off the fake/example applicants from the various schools, ie UCSF? Just to get a better idea of what is real. by the way I like your evil twin p**** though I don't really believe the stats

just posted my info on your amazing site. Repeat: AMAZING. I am personally nominating your for a Nobel Peace Prize for your selfless endeavor.

Just by way of business: I found a few spelling errors and realized that my comments were way too long for the space provided.

Great site dude, thanks! I just hope enough people get in on it so that it really becomes useful! I'm sure next years class will be thanking you.

this is an amazing website....you will always be remembered. Thanks a lot!

you are awesome! i so wish they had something like this when i was getting ready to apply!

Will people really post their true stats? I'm sure all the 20+ AA DAT's and 3.5+ GPA's will run to post and show themselves off. But will the 16-17 AA DAT's and 3.1 GPA's do the same? I think the info will be helpful, but not nearly a real picture of the actual pool.

Thank you all for all the feedback, including all the personal messages I got!! I didn't expect so much possitive feedback so fast!!!

The following mesages will address the above questions, comments

This is exactly what my website needs. It absoluletyl DEPENDS on word of mouth to get as many people as humanly possible to create a record...or the data is meaningless. If someday we can get 50% of the applicant pool to create and update a record, it will be an extremely valuable tool. Get the word out!!!!! 🙂

Thanks SDN'ers!

Well, I own, or rather owned, my own web design business for 6 years - called Gemini Design Systems. Also have been bartending since I went to Berkeley a very long time ago. About that other stuff?...that's the plan!!!!!!!!!!

🙂

Right now the site in in Beta so there are probably errors in it. In addition, the website as it stands now is not very usefull due to the low number of memebrs....although I'm getting a ton of new ones every 5 sec!!! Thanks guys!

I will remove the "fake" members onece I get about 9 or 10 real members who applied to UCSF. There needs to be something to look at for people visiting the site for the first time.

By the way, I might be somewhat talented in web programing and even able to get into UCSF but that does not mean I don't spell like a 4th grader!! 🙂 I suck at spelling and have allways sucked at. As a concrete rule: Email me when you see anything wrong with the website including suggestions!!

Im not sure i get how it works. I entered all my info and when i go to the Case page, it says 0 accepted. Although i have been accepted and my information on the site reflects that.

There is no way to know who anyone is. There are no names.

But you are correct, there is no way to prevent someone putting in erroneous info or not at all. I do believe that the people who get ACCEPTED to a school will put their actual data (since they got in) and thats what predents are obsessed about most

I hope people will not lie and post their true stats. This is very necessary otherwise this site will be useless. If you don't want to post your stats then don't do it, but please don't put down false information.

I looked up your record and u didnt add the date you got accepted. Put that in and it will work.

I Put a note saying that the date (presence or abscence) is what dictates your progress at a school. For one, it's the only way to have multiple statuses at the same school and also, dates are important to pre-dents.

Thanks for signing up.

Just entered in all my stuff. I like the comments portion. It's nice to see that much information on a single page.

Well, it has been brought to my attention and if you can believe it, I was already offered a donation! (the website has been live for 6 hours!)

As the title states, it's a gift for pre-dents and SDN. I've been through this living hell we call the "application cycle" and just wanted to help others.

OK, that's on one hand. The other is,...you're right. I will be broke for the next 4 years, something I'm not used to since I owned my own web design business. And if I can have the occasional steak dinner instead of Mac 'N Cheese, then so be it!!

Seriously though, I may put in a donation system in the future but right now, it's a gift!

Very good site. Job well done dude. You should consider selling this baby to the ADA, I'm sure they would be interested.

Great site... But how the heck do ya say what school you are attending...?

I can't figure that out!

I can't figure that out!

i think its one of the options under current status for the school u are attending.

I think you put Louisville twice in a sense. Just look, you'll see what I'm talking about. It's in the scroll down portion. It says Louisville, but it's Louisiana. Yeah and how do you say if you're attending?

Is there a way to put people's ages on personal info portion. Also, male or female. Just a thought.

The drop down menu called "status" has a selection called "Attending". Select that and you are good to go!

I am thinking of removing the "interviewd" and "accepted" options for the status field becuase that info is pulled from the presence or absence of the date. I think it is still a little confusing and not 100% intuitive like I want it to be.

Thanks for the input. Keep it coming. Remember, it's still in Beta but we will get it working like a champ for next cycle!!

Good work PDizzle, you are a superhero. This site will really help me when applying 🙂

I'm sure it already probably crossed your mind... but I was more thinking of advertising space that would generate extra income for you. If there is enough traffic to the site, you might get bids...

lol.....generallee, it really does seem that dentistry attracts folks with a business mentality...i bet your future practice will have all sorts of advertisements on the walls, tables, waiting area...all over.....no offense but it's kinda funny..... 😀 😀

no offense taken! 🙂
We all have to be business minded people... alot of what dentistry will be for most of us is how we manage our business! 😉

Great site, I just added my info! Should be very helpful to next cycle applicants.

in the gpa and stats update part i tried to enter in all of my information at once (the gpa, extra-curr., and dat) and then clicked on the update under the dat part and it erased all of my info! I had to enter in the gpa/extra curr. section first and then hit update for that section..then add my dat stuff and hit update...how about just one update button for all of it?

Great job PDizzle..........you've got my profile on there now also.

genious. i added my info.

Being a technical person myself, I can see it costs to run a site like that, especially when you become a student again. Donation is a great idea. Make sure you take cashier checks as well. Running ads as Generallee suggested is also great. Great Work! I'm glad you will be part of the UCSF family. If you need back-up, I may be able to help out . No promise though : )

Wow. Impressive. I'm sure this will help next cycle applicants. I'm adding my info now.

thank you sir, your work deserves gold! 🙂 🙂 🙂

no better way to give back to the world; or maybe just the country.

Wow! I wish this had been around when I was applying. I think a wait-listed option would be helpful too.

bad post...didn't realize the system.

Your website is so helpful! Thank you!! Two things: 1) I think you spelled quantitative wrong - easy mistake. 2) Maybe you already have it and I just didn't see it, but it would be really cool to scroll through applicants and see their stats. For instance, if you want to know the stats of all the students who got into one particular school, it was hard to go from one stat to the next - I kept having to start from home. But again, thank you - so awesome!
And for everybody else with lower stats, please post!! I did, and mine are not stellar - no shame at all. In 4 or 5 years, we will all be dentists and none of this gpa/dat stuff will matter. Really!!

That is an absolutely awesome site...I'm glad that wasn't around last cycle, I would've spent all my time cross-examining stats. 😎

One improvement I thought of as I was entering my info. is that there could be a "waitlisted" category...someone probably already mentioned that.

Once again though, Awesome work. 👍

Hey PDizzle

is that you in the picture ...after you finished the web site?

another thing to add to your to do list: make it so you can see the stats for each application cycle year..i.e. you should have an option that asks what year you applied in...only b.c. i saw some names that I know were accepted last year and have nothing to do with this application cycle but get factored into this years stats....unless you want it to be everyone that ever applied from years back putting their info up into one huge graph.....anyone see what i'm sayin'?

PDIzzle,

Thanks for the new website. Now that some people have entered there stats in, maybe you could delete all the ones you made up for examples. Mainly because I can't tell for sure which ones are real and which are bullcrap. Thanks
