Interesting title to your post....
I'm only a lowly MS3, but I think I might have some good advice for you.
1-Do well in classes, especially second year classes, since doing well in year two will help you on the boards
2-Do well on the Boards, I think the average matched score was 229 this year. High, but definitely doable if you work hard
3-If you're interested in doing research, check out your ophtho program and find out which faculty members might be interested in having a medical student do research during the year or over the summer.
4-If you want to read about stuff that ophthalmologists see in clinic, check out "Basic Ophthalmology for Medical Students and Primary Care Residents". I think Dr. Doan has a link to it here
http://www.eyerounds.org/books.htm. That might help you decide if Ophtho is for you.
5-Check out the forum FAQ, that'll probably answer alot of your questions
It's good that you're thinking about it so early in your med school career, since ophtho is competitive and an early match, BUT make sure you keep an open mind about other specialties. Try to enjoy the next few years of med school instead of looking at it as a means towards matching in ophth. Good luck
