While you study all these years, arent you like in prison? Unless you're a dr you're not qualified to do any other job. You cant mess up on your grades or go to another country for a year. Most people do 4 years of college and start adult life(engineer, teacher, cop, whatever) while you're still getting mommy's allowance or loans. Discuss?

Come on, studying as an undergrad isn't all THAT bad. The hardest part is learning how to study. And we all graduate with a bachelor's degree in something--it's not like our only choice is med school. College should be college, a whole education in itself, not just a stepping stone to med school.

I have several pre-med friends who went abroad their junior year. And what's wrong with doing your best academically? I'd be doing that even if I weren't pre-med. I guess I'm trying to say that I don't feel "trapped" by "having" to get good grades because it is a standard I set for myself because I know my capabilities, and I enjoy challenges.

Different strokes for different folks. Some jobs take more training. Medicine is not unique in that it takes several years post-bachelor's degree. A career choice isn't inferior because it requires more time in school rather than immediately entering the "real world." Many of us have never depended on our parents' money.

It pieces me off. you finish 4 years of undergrad and you have 10 more years of education.

Obviously its easier to have fun when you work. You just sit your 8 hours and then you dont have to worry about studying for tomorrows exam or doing hw, you can just go meet with your buddies.

Premed life is not prison. A LOT of these premed types would be miserable and study all the time no matter what their major is. If you make your life like that you are going to have a breakdown. I am a senior premed and have found that having an active social life is key to keeping up with work. All work and no play makes for a big, unhappy loser.

in the spirit of g.w.f. hegel, recent history is unique in that people have a choice in the profession that they pursue. if you don't like medicine, then do something else.

Why do I feel that this is not exactly a serious inquiry? 🙄

why remain in prison, when the door is wide open?

I want to go into medicine (partly) because it fascinates me. There are other reasons, but certainly an unending curiosity is a part of it - and thus I specifically want a career with a lifetime of learning. I would infact be very disappointed if the 10 years of postbac education you refer to is all there is...

Sure, sometimes I don't feel like studying, but with any job, there are periods where you don't feel like doing the task immediately infront of you that must be done. If your concept of a regular job is that you just sit for 8 hours then carry on worry free I strongly urge you to try it - not because I believe you will get a rude awakening to the reality of it (though I suspect you will) which involves just as much, if not more tedium and undesirable tasks, and just as much worry and taking of work home - but I urge you to do it as if you go into medicine with that belief you will always envy them and become one of those sad, bitter, disillusioned docs we all have experienced.

As to your concept that most people go to college and that they are somehow "free" of mommys allowance. Most people don't even go to college, they just get a job straight out of high school. Do you envy those people even more? They went to a pay check even sooner! And all these people actually still have people to answer to - bosses and banks - and I guarantee none of them believes they have "enough" money...it's just one of those universal constants.

Finally the notion that one must maintain perfect grades and go straight through without a year off is bunk. I've been accepted to one of the top US med schools - but I 'dropped out' of college at one stage of my journey to today - and have spent many years out of college, working, travelling, living and loving. There are many ways to live your life. I strongly recommend you live it the way you think is right for you - rather than trying to follow a formula which as evidenced by people like me - just doesn't need to be followed if you don't want to.

more importantly, why did I feel the need to respond?

my problem is that im either completely without life or i get too careless. Should i go out for a night, i miss the next day of classes. Its no biggy if you actually work as an engineer or something, you just have to get to work without doing any homework. And whatever job you do in the real world, you dont have to worry about anything in your off hours.

But here i must worry about all the stupid tests. And dont forget the mcat, it's so timeconsuming. Once i finish the 4 years undergrad, i can look forward to 10 more years of hell.😡

so what do you think would happen if you were working and you "missed the next day" just because you had gone out. It's called getting fired. Welcome to the real world 🙄

as I said in my earlier post - thats completely untrue. Many jobs have significant prep time or other commitments outside of "working hours".

I mean if you work as an engineer, cop, doctor, etc. You just come to work at certain hours, and no one bothers you the rest of the time. Of course i wouldnt miss work. But nothing happens if i come in completely relaxed after a weekend of partying. But in school you must read something every day, or you're screwed. And this schooling goes on until you're at least 25🙁 And they really own you until you finish residensy.

If you don't feel that you are ready to commit to such a demanding career, then don't yet.

I sure wouldn't want you as my doctor. You don't like the studying that goes into being pre-med?? Too bad!! No one is ASKING you to become a doctor! I'm sure a lot of garbage men who didn't go to college dont like wading around in other peoples junk and coming home smelling like last weeks dinner, either. If you can't hack it, get your jacket.

But maybe Im wrong...

I dont like that you're so condescending. Might say something in defence of garbagemen and your low iq, but thats not what i want to discuss. Want to hear opinions on whats fun to do before you become a doc, coz as i see it sucks.

Troll alert. I think the avatar says it all.

Nothing I said about garbagemen requires defense. But thats the real world. Pardon me if I come off condescending, but no where in any of your whining posts have I seen anything on "how can I have fun while Im premed?" If you want to hang out and party until all hours and just come and go as you please, then maybe medicine isn't the profession for you, because it takes more dedication than that. And just to state the painfully obvious, I dont know WHY Im wasting my time on this thread, because it was clearly just started to get peoples panties in a twist. You can make your own fun...if your life as a premed sucks, theres no one to blame but yourself.
