For those who have been lucky enough to have been accepted to a medical school, I was wondering what steps you are taking to prepare. For example, what should we buy (PDA, stethoscope, etc.)? It seems that aside from the deposit, I have done little else to get myself ready. If its one thing this long process has taught me, it's that preparation is an invaluable skill. And so, can people share what y'all doin to prepare? thanks

I'm not accepted yet, but I have ben preparing for medical school. I've been trying to set aside 30 minutes a day and study a subject that I will get in medical school that I know I have no background in. so lately I have been memorizing all of the different muscles and reading my old high school physiology book. My goal is to read 10 pages a day. For the anatomy, I also baught a three page review thingy that I take with me and study whenever I have down time, like at the gym or sitting waiting for a basketball game to start.

whoa... freak alert.

umm... i don't think you need to do anything until you get there... i don't plan on doing anything like reviewing subjects or buying stethoscopes until i get there.

Not doing anything..repeat..anything. BTW, my school has parties the first week. Like one on the USS Alabama, financial parties, real parties, congrats parties, etc. Gotta love it here. (More reason to come here Swampman.)

You'll have to tell me more about these parties! They were never mentioned in the interview. :D

You know...If I do end up going to USA, everyone who reads SDN is going to know who I am. I'll probably be one of only 2 or 3 FL residents there. That kinda freaks me out a bit! ;)

Concerning the original Q, I only intend to fully furnish an apartment the summer before classes. If I am going to USA, I will rent an apartment and work while staying with my parents. I can keep my furniture at the apartment, and work at my former job. The money's great, and I can slowly get all the stuff I need without cramming it into my parents' house. This way, I will be able to live comfortably while going to school.

I don't intend to do anything related to school, though I should since I'll have my degree in chemistry. I kinda feel ill prepared in comparison to biology majors.

For those of you already studying...relax you overachievers! You're going to be in medical school 4 years and then residency from anywhere between 3-7 years (then perhaps a fellowship). Therefore, the next few months represent our last few months of not having to memorize thousands of facts...

ENJOY the next six months--there's no need to start prepping now. Sheesh. :p ;) :)

Yeah, I'm going to try desperately not to work this summer, but I'm sure I'll be broke and will have to. Yeah, the parties are also a lot about "lemme give you a lot of money..." Some are hosted by banks and stuff, go figure.

Thanks lamyers for begging me to come. I feel so left out. So hurt

But I wanna hear more about the parties.

there is noooooooooo need to start studying now! you have the rest of your life!!!!! to prepare for medical school i am: chilling with my hubbie, horsing around with my goofy high school friends, making fun of my parents, shopping at ross dress for less, planning my sister's wedding, annoying my brother, travelling, finishing up stuff i didn't when i graduated, thanking people, etc. i am enjoying it. i couldn't imagine picking up a book until like july/august at the earliest!!!!! after four years of hard work, i think i deserve it and i think the rest of us deserve it!

Absolutely did not mean to leave you out, but see Swampman was making me give him reasons to come here a while back as opposed to some horrid little school down in Florida (just kidding). That's the only reason why I was so encouraging to him! So, with no wasted time, please, please, grunermann, please come to South! We soooo want you here!!! :D

Hey dynamite, I hope we don't go to the same medical school, because you'll mess up the curve!

ALL of the medical students I've met told me to chill out and do all the things I'll probably not have time to do in the next four years. Furthermore, if you were a good pre-med student, the basic science courses during M1 are just refreshers. And if you memorize Netter's Anatomy now, chances are you'll forget in September.

HAVE FUN! Before it's too late.

...that's the beauty of pass/fail med schools....Curve...what curve?

wow - thats cool Jalbrekt. I was just planning on getting Harrison's principles and reading up on a disease every day.

I will prepare by sitting on my ass, drinking some beer, and watching Springer. Yesterday was a good one about people who wanted to become pornstars and wanted to tell their girlfriends/boyfriends about it.

Part of the reason I can study so much is because I'm a grad student right now. The class that I teach I have down pat, and for everybody who does research, you know there is tons of down time. I used to spend the down time checking SDN every ten minutes, now I only use half of that time to do that. I havn't had a class in about 11 months, so I kind of miss school.

i friggin started my own company to make some $$

yeah yeah

Buy a dope motorbike. Get a tattoo (on a place that can be covered by scrubs). Try to get bigger. Have fun. Then start up. --Trek

Hey Grunermann!

Don't feel bad -- lamyers didn't beg me either!! ;) That's ok, she can make it up to me Saturday with a great tour... hee hee. She probably already knows I'm 90 percent certain I'm going to Mobile. Also, what about these parties?

By the way, I just got my new Rohen's Atlas and it is SOOOOO cool. I have an anatomy practical tomorrow so it will come in handy just in time... :p

Oh, a tatoo sounds good. I told my husband if I was accepted I'd get one... now I'll have to see if I can do it or not.

I wanna get some cool scrubs... a couple pairs each a different color :)
And I asked for a stethoscope for my birthday.
Other than that I have to graduate...blah!! And will spend my 4th summer out in the sun getting paid for it as a lifeguard.
