What did everyone else do to prepare for interviews? Is there a magazine or website or somewhere that has the current issues that are occurring in medicine to prepare for current medical events questions?
What's the best way to go about preparing for this (and ethics questions and controversial issues as well).
Thanks!
REad the Wash U Bioethics site (useful applicants link). They have case studies. I found it helpful to try giving an answer before looking at their answer.
They have links on useful applicants link for current affairs.
Know about healthcare funding crisis and insurance problems. Think about question" What is the biggest problem facing healthcare today? What would you do about it?"
For controversial things, euthanasia and abortion, I was told by my friend (a current surgery resident) it's illegal to ask. Anyway, I was asked by my student interviewer during my interview about abortion. If they do ask, be "politically safe" on these ones by straddling the fence. (also advised by friend). No extreme views, or bashing religion etc.
Practice saying things about yourself, your experience out loud, to get rid of uhhhm, and ahhhs, and "you know", "like" expressions. I think it's best to have friends and then someone more formal, like a professor or advisor practice with you. (I didn't and during interview, I was suprised at the awkward sentences that came out, when I answered, "Why medicine?" so....)
