preserved vs reduced EF in Hf

can someone explain why in systolic HF you have a reduced EF with an increase in EDV; and in diastolic you'd have a preserved EF with normal EDV. also what would happen to ESV in these scenarios.
its a simple concept but can't seem to get the exact logic down based on the EF equation.
