Quick question. I am trying to sort out 2-5 on my ROL and am struggling between programs such as BIDMC vs. UPenn. My wife and I would like very much to settle down in the Boston area and have our careers there. That being said, I think I would like to rank BIDMC higher than UPenn, thinking I might have an easier time of getting a fellowship in Boston (plus living where we want to be now.. maybe buy a house). But I wonder if the name of Upenn would carrier me further in the long run... any opinions??

While you have a point in that Penn has a better name, I think the fellowship list of BID shows that plenty of people are able to stay in Boston either at one of the Harvard programs or at another program. Plus, if you went to Penn, you would have to make an additional move which is always a hassle. BID is a solid program with Harvard faculty so I don't think your education would be diminished in any way if you chose them

I can't speak for Penn - friends of mine there are happy. You have to decide on where you'll be the happiest. 3 yrs can be a very long time if you are not happy. I can say that Boston is a nice place to live and with no overnight call on the BI wards, you'll see your wife a bit more.
