    As the title reads.....

If you were a dental assistant or dental hygienist or dental lab technician

    Before entering dental school

How has your dental experiences impacted you while as a student in dental school?

I wasn't a very good assistant, but it was nice knowing teeth numbers and some basics. I feel like it has helped me most with knowing process for fillings, crowns, etc, that a lot of my class mates aren't as familiar with. I imagine hygienists have an easier time with indirect vision, too. Which is a biggie.

I noticed that the previous assistants and hygienists in my class were much more comfortable in the mouth when we first started doing OD and cleanings. I was initially apprehensive about touching certain things (outside the mouth), how much pressure to put, how hard I can retract the cheek or tongue, stuff like that. I was always afraid to touch anywhere outside the mouth once my fingers have already been covered in spit. I know some females hate people touching their face, especially if they have spitty fingers. Some people have no problem applying slight pressure on the side of the face or chin to get the pt to re-position, but I just back off and ask them to move, just in case they don't like being touched.

I think that is the biggest difference, but it doesn't take long to learn the limits of what you can and can't do concerning pt interaction.

Has anybody seen any negative aspects?

    For example:

Sometimes individuals who think they know a little more than others will be more cocky and rude.

People in my class who tended to the best in lab were those who either had experience as a lab technician or worked in a lab for a summer. There were a couple of ppl who assisted and seemed to do better in waxing, drilling, etc as well. However, those who had prior experience in a dental lab tended to the best in waxing, drilling, etc. Both groups had some who were inherently poor at science classes and didactics, but they were able to spend more time studying these subjects because they were spending less time in lab.

It depends on how extensive your dental assisting experience was but I found it to be very helpful

Is it a good idea to stay in contact with dental school admissions during the application process for pre-dents?

I would say it is only important if there have been any changes to your application, or you want to update them on your shadowing/volunteer hours.

Otherwise calling every week would be annoying?
