Most SDN members seem to be typical pre-meds with typical stats; high GPAs, decent MCATs, good volunteer experience, and good ECs. I've been in the Navy for the past 11 years and I don't have much volunteer experience or humanitarian ECs, but I do have a lot of unique experience. How much success have prior military applicants had in this crazy application game?

I have also been in the military (Air Force) for the past 10 years. (incuding time at the Academy) I have been very fortunate to be accepted to my first choice this year. Most of my interviewers thought it was really cool that I was in the military, even though I didn't wear a uniform to my interviews. All I have taken is the basic pre-med requirments since my undergrad degree is in aerospace engineering. I also did a lot of volunteer work both at the base hospital and in the local area. Good luck!

Hey Rhizoid, I was a former Marine and cop and my interviewers all seemed to like the additional life experience it afforded me. I got into my first choice, maybe in part because one of my interviewers was a Navy guy. The experience definately can't hurt.

I'd like to see some stats for any successful prior military folks. Numbers and schools, please. I'm hoping to see that a lot of military experience tends to compensate for volunteering, etc. It's not that military folks don't want to volunteer, but it's pretty much impossible for some of us, given the demands on our time.

Ex-Army (Intel-hahahaha), went the trad route of getting my B.S. 3.95/29R, accepted at South Alabama (EDP). Don't know what my chances would be at "bigger" schools. They love military experience. I did work for a surgeon, was a CNA and do some tissue harvesting (mostly for fun). Good luck!

Yeah, you know us sicko pre-meders! I have a very tolerant friend who runs the program...

Ex-Army here and married to a soldier. I believe that adcom's realize the demands that a military job entails thus I would not worry to much about volunteering. If you have the time and the chance to do so, you might want to involve yourself a few hours a week in something meaningful. I do not necessarily think that all the volunteer experiences have to be clinically related, they just have to mean something to you.

I was a buck sergeant in the Marine Reserves but two of my classmates had more sexy jobs in the military. One was a lieutenant in the SEALS, the other was a Captain in the Green Berets. The point of my little story is that everytime I overhear someone from my school extolling the wide diversity and "coolness" of our class to potential students they never fail to mention one or both of those guys. So yeah, I'd say they're pretty impressed with prior military.

Rhizoid,
I sent you a PM. I believe my military experience helped in getting into school.
