Hi,
I'm a current third year medical student interested in ophthalmology. I really want to practice comprehensive ophthalmology in a rural area and I was wondering if this might be a turn-off to some academic programs? Might it be an advantage at other programs? Thanks.

What you want to do is different than what you will answer in an interview. Your answer is "I definitely see the appeal of private practice, but also think I would have a rewarding career in academia". This way you are not lying, but also not saying you have no interest in academic medicine.
