This question is directed towards a program director:

Roughly speaking, what percentage of applicants interviewed will actually be ranked by a program? I was told it was less than 80%. Is this correct, and if so what factors would prevent someone from being ranked after being offered an interview??

I think it can depend on the competitiveness of the program and field. In IM (which I assume is why you're posting here), virtually 100% of interviewed candidates are ranked. Why not? It doesn't cost me any more to rank as many candidiates as I want. I ask myself a simple question: would I rather scramble than take this applicant? Scrambling is a bit of a nightmare, so I want my list as long as possible with quality applicants.
