Programs to apply to in the Northeast

I'm a fourth year medical student at a state university hoping to nab a spot at a reasonably strong IM program in the upcoming match. I was wondering what programs I should be looking at in the northeast (in particular NYC, Long island, Philly, NJ ). Im probably an average to slightly above average candidate academically ( probably top 20% class(mostly mixed HP/H), did pretty well on my step I, no real research (cheesy summer project btw 1-2nd year - not published). Im looking for a friendly place with a reasonable call schedule which has some in house fellowships (paricularly in cards and endocrine). I dont really care if its "ranked "all that highly, just want a good group of people and a reasonable shot at getting a fellowship. Any help would be appreciated.

Not exactly in your defined area, but I loved Dartmouth. Brand new hospital, friendly people. Not a city though.

Have heard good things about Brown.

If you're honest about what you say regarding what you're looking for, then there are lots of possibilities. The NY area is packed with places that fit the description you specify. All of the major academic programs in NY have all the fellowships you could ask for in-house (maybe one or two here and there may lack a rheum fellowship, for example...). Some of them are great programs known for particularly strong fellowships in specific areas. You just have to figure out which one you think you'd fit in best at.

Thank you both for your reply. I am mainly interested in the new york area, and like I implied, a fellowship in either cardiology or endocrinology (really different fields, i know =). I guess I was just looking for a general impression from people about thier feelings on specific programs in the area.
DR, I know that you mentioned that many of the university programs in NYC would fit my description, but I hear that many of the most sought after places (like cornell, columbia, NYU) are quite malignant in terms of thier work enviornment (perhaps i have been misinformed?). I would appreciate any information about these places, and any others that would allow me to work at place where I would be "happy" for three or more years. (Like I said, although the university programs would be nice, Im open to good community programs too, If the enviornment is good).

I'd also be interested in hearing about the more "pleasant" NYC programs (there's no way I'd count on Columbia/Cornell anyway!) that would still give me a good shot at an endocrinology fellowship.

Also the one concern my parents have raised about being in NYC (which would be great in all other respects) is cost of living - and I'll graduate with a huge 200K debt. Is it really hard to make it on a resident's salary?
