Programs with Dedicated Research Time?
Started by Kara
Yale has 6 months of protected time that can be dedicated to research or elective activity. A clinical investigator track is also being developed which will be an option during the 6 months. The proposed clinical investigator track program in radiation oncology intends to include coursework from the Yale Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program.
At Beaumont they give you a full year of research, totally protected - no call. That much time is pretty much as good as it gets at programs, without doing the Holman Pathway. It is unfortunate because at some of the places with great cancer centers (ie, University of Washington - which gives you 3 months, semi-protected) they don't give you nearly that much.

harvard; one full year.
well there is protected time and "protected time". some isn't guarenteed or needs to be negotiated. The harvard thing is one year like it or not. JHH is negotiated.
University of Chicago: One full year, completely protected. as well as two months of away electives, expenditure covered by the department.
Vanderbilt:
1 year - protected except for call (very light)
> 50% of residents are on Holman pathway = 18-24 months protected
If research is your thing, then Vandy could be your next best friend...

The Holman Pathway may be an option for someone interested in clinical or basic research in the field of radiology, especially if you want to go into academia. As a member of the American Board of Radiology (ABR), radiation oncology also sponsors stellar research candidates for this investigator track. I have included the website below and it states that you can still apply in the PGY-1 year or PGY-2 year so you can create research opportunities within your own department.
