Hi!
can somebody tell me what does a foreign trained specialist (orthodontist) will need to do to get a license to work in USA?
can I directly get into an orthodontics speciality course or would i have to go through an International dentist's program as well to get a DDS/DMD first?
thank you.

you can apply directly to an orthodontic programs. It will be stiff competition. Every state has different requirements to practices. I think there are about 14 states that allow a foriegn DDS as long as you did a specialty program in the US. If you want to go anywhere, you will need a US DDS and then a US ortho certificate (if you want to advertise as an orthodontist). Also you will need to pass state licensure requirements, which usuaully entails a clinical exam with live patients.

All in all, it's a tough road with lots of obstacles built in.

hey thank u for the reply.
can u please tell me which states would allow me to get a dental license if i do not have a DDS/DMD...or maybe tell me where i can find the list of such states.
thank u :)

ADA.org under education you'll find a pdf that has requirements for each state. You can also apply to AEGD or GPR and be a general dentist, and you are allowed to advertise yourself as general dentist specializing in ortho tx, but if you mess up many cases you can get in lots of trouble.
