I'm at 3300 characters, and Ive said what I wanted to say, I can add a bit more, but 5300 is pushing it i feel. How short is too short? Plagued by conciseness!

Concise is good, but I'm sure you can expand with stories and details. Showing is better than telling.

If you want to PM me, I would be happy to read over it (I will send you my email) and perhaps let you know where you can expand, if at all. If you think it is done, then send it. You are the ultimate judge.

i got the general feeling from these boards that between 5000-5300 is the safe zone. if you need another reader, send me a pm.

If it's good, it's good. I had 50 less characters than that and got into 3 schools. So my vote it that it really doesnt matter as long as the content is there. Have these people read it and they can help you out.

it all depends on how much you've said. if you've said what you want to show the adcoms why you want to be a doc, then 3300 is fine. there's no "safe zone" as it is variable from PS to PS. mine was close to 4700 last year and this year it's 4000 despite the fact that i have 10x more things to say.

It's not about the length of the PS, it's how you make the adcom feel with it.

I presume PS is an abbreviation for personal statement in this context.

The answer is sort of like a woman's skirt. Long enough to cover it all, but short enough to make it interesting

And I get the general feeling from these boards that you have to sell your soul to the devil to have any chance of admission anywhere. Doesn't make it true....
