Wondering who here is psych majors, and if you are one, were you always planning on being premed from the start or did you have a change of heart midway through or something.

I started out as a biochem major...then thought about switching over to psych...then decided to stay with biochem and tack on psych as a minor.

Psych is pretty interesting. It's a nice change of pace when you're taking heavy science classes most of the time.

Its my last quarter of undergrad and I'm taking my first ever psych class. Its pretty interesting, but I've only made it to two classes so far.

Gotta love psych:laugh: .

i was always pre-med but i started as a chem major. then i realized that i cared a lot more about people then i cared about molecules. so i switched to psych. i tended to take more of the biological psychology courses instead of the social psychology courses.

I am a Psych major. I started out a biology and chemistry major, but went to Psych because that is my true passion, and am taking my science and math classes as the classes that I have to have as electives!!! It is a very interesting field.

freshman yr: bioengineering
sophmore yr: undeclared
junior yr: psych
senior yr: double major psych & molecular cell bio

yeah...i was unsure about the premed thing till pretty much senior year. psych rocks though, if that's what you are considering.

started out psych. wanted to go into clinical psych or psychiatry. discovered liked psychiatry and that it required a MD. went premed. double majored in psych and bio. now bio major and psych minor

I'm a psych major! I was always interested in psych and took a couple of college psych classes while I was in high school. Once I got set on pre-med I thought I would just be a bio major until I talked to a couple people who advised me to major in what I wanted to. I'm really glad I did, I love psych, and I take enough science classes as it is! 🙂

I am a psyc major. I was a bio major initially and then changed to psychology. But i have always known i wanted to go to medical school.

ahhhh....cool cool... I initially went with psych just because I wanted to get into psychiatry, but then I realized psychiatry wasn't for me. I still stuck with psych though after my adviser said just major in whatever you like. Here's another question...do most psychiatrists tend to major in psych? I have always wondered this...

no, not always. The MD I work with is a psychiatrist and he was a physics major. He got into psychiatry because of the techinical aspects of the brain. He is doing academic medicine. But I know another psychiatrist that did double major in bio and psych. I guess it just depends.
🙂

First started out at U of Ill as a Bioengineering major...and then ended up graduating from Benedictine as a Psychology/Bio major.....love psychology and think it helps ...especially when coping with the stresses of medical school...haha

Psych major as well as a Bio. major. Always knew that I was more interested in Psych, but in hs, parents didnt approve it 🙄 Now Im older(im 20), so Its like, "screw it..its my life!" 😛 Afterall, when Im gonna be succesful, it wont matter to them what I majored in. But if I fail, they'll be on my throat. So, might as well do something that I know Im better at and theres a greater chance of success. I know I kinda steered off to a new road here, but I just wanna make this point to all those ppl who listen to their parents and not to their hearts.

Anyway so Im a student at a JC and ill be transfering in fall 2004 to some UC. When I transfer, I'll change majors to "Psychobiology" because the courses im taking now are for both majors and it'll be an easy transition when I transfer.

Did I answer your question?😉

I was a psych major, always wanted to be a doctor, but was fascinated by psych.

Got a job in Mental Health, which I love, but realized that medicine was my calling because you have a better chance of fixing what is wrong. The population of psych. patients I work with are very chronic, demanding, and mostly borderline.

I learned quickly that psych is not so much about fixing as it is about maintaining.

It's a tough field. (But I still love it)

I was going to be a psych major but wife didnt approve, switched to bio.🙁

Psych major- I love psych, and since I graduated in 02, I now have a job in the psychiatry department at NYU. It's interesting though, I've gotten quite a bit of pressure on my med school interviews about why I want to pursue an MD instead of a PhD in clinical psych. Anyone else with this problem?

They actually pressured you with the question of clinical psych PhD instead of MD? What did you say to the interviewers?😱
