In California, there is only one licensure: physicians and surgeons. There are no special licensures for specialties, nor is there mention of specialization in the Business and Professions Code.
Are there any state or federal requirements to practice psychiatry? I mean, if a former resident in osteopathy decides "Hey, I'm going to start an tacticians psychiatry," aside from the fact they'd have difficulty findings clients or getting medical malpractice insurance, is there anything in law--state or federal--that prevents them from doing that?
I know the ABPN requirements, but nothing I've found requires membership in the ABPN to practice psychiatry.
I'm looking for specific laws or regulations designating who can call themselves a psychiatrist and act in that capacity v. who can't.
