I've been doing work on a project this summer. Next summer there is an anticipated publication upon which I will be a minor author. How significant is this in relation to being a primary author?

By next summer I will only be finishing my sophomore year -_-

For a premed, especially one just finishing sophomore year, that's pretty great.

It's a nice thing. As a premed, you're not really expected to have publications at all, so any mention is an achievement. Though, as you correctly note, first authors do get a lot more credit in the real world. But it would definitely help the application either way.

A word of caution though, don't count your chickens before they hatch. A lot of things are going to have to happen to get your piece published, so I wouldn't bank on it until it's actually in print.
