Which summer research internships allow to not only contribute to faculty's work but also publish?

Authorship comes from contributing intellectually to a publication. Ten weeks worth of work, during the summer as an undergrad with little to no research experience, is rarely enough time to be able to contribute significantly enough to a body of work in order to gain authorship. It happens, but it doesn't happen often. I'm not trying to be harsh. I'm just trying to give you a realistic view point.

Publications are a lot of work, and they can take anywhere from six months to a year to hit press from the date of submission. This doesn't count the amount of time spent preparing the manuscript before submission, which is lengthy. A ten week summer project is, unfortunately, little more than a drop in the bucket in most cases. These research programs are designed for undergraduates to experience research, work in a lab setting with a team of investigators, learn techniques, get acquainted with the literature, maybe get a little bit of preliminary data, write up a small paper or poster, and begin to understand the critical thinking process.

I am authored on a manuscript currently under review from a summer internship program. The lab was super small (just one post-doc and one lab tech) and I had a significant amount of previous research experience using the same/similar techniques. Because of my experience and them needing all the help they could get I was allowed to do a ton of work which is why I think I have received authorship.

Just because you do a particular program does not mean you are going to get published. Its all going to depend on the lab, the PI, and if you get lucky. The program I did was a very large program, but I have not heard of any other students getting published.

To keep anonymity, I'm not going to mention my program, but if you want to know, PM me.

And as gettheleadout said, I do not think any program says you cannot get published.
