I am an IMG who was (and still is) interested in cardiology and was thinking that I'm dead set to be in that specialty (though I had pulm/cc in the back of my mind for so long too). So I managed to do research and publish 5 papers in cardiology (mostly cardiology specific journals). However for several reasons (competitiveness, found out I love shift work more, like variety of illnesses, like more clinics, like dealing with sleeping patients more, not into memorizing a thousand trials...etc), I am starting to like pulm/cc more and more.
I want to make that decision (cards vs pulm/cc) after my first year of IM residency (by the end of pgy1 when I experienced both). Would my continued research in cardiology (might continue doing research in pgy1 given how competitive the field is) up until then hinder my chances at pulm/crit? Would I be able to convince them that I changed my mind and truly want pulm/crit if I end up applying for it. Is it too competitive for me to be able to do that?
With the spike in competitiveness of pulm/crit I don't know if that would be possible now.
What do you think?
