Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering what are pharmacists' views on purchasing prescription drugs outside the U.S.?

Like Mexico?

I would not recommend it.

Well it is ILLEGAL, so pharmacists don't really get a say. On a side note, why would a pharmacist support a person taking their business outside of the country?

Buying drugs out of the country is legal.

You're thinking importation...different story.

Man you guys need to go to Mexico :hardy: It's like Viagra & Cipro being hawked like Coke on a hot day.

Hello Everyone,

In most cases besides well respected countries like Canda, not recommended. There is a good chance the meds might be counterfeit, lower purity, or out right dangerous.

I wonder why it is free. Overstock? Either why im sure there are plenty of happly older couples

haha, probably some crappy promo to get people in the door. Maybe a "buy 100 tablets of Cipro, get some Viagra free!"

So, if you've got a raging infection and ED...you know where to go! (This was in Ensenada, but any place there's a Papas & Beer or a cruise ship stop, you'll find a farmacia).

I buy them all the time outside the US. Course I live in Canada, so it's not a problem for me :D

Wow, a lot of people said not to buy drugs outside of this country. Actually to tell you the truth, Countries have their own FDA as well so it can be safe to buy things outside our borders. I even bought drugs to help my sinuses in Mexico and it went fine. I am still alive! But, I noticed that even my birth place (Brazil), the pharmacies deliever drugs to your doorstep like when a person delievers your chinese food or pizza. I love this procedure because it helps the elder get their drugs faster and easier. Too bad the states don't have it but I believe that had to be a security and confidential issue (HIPAA).

Let me ask you though, why did you put this in our thread if the question ask for pharmacist views not ours?

During my most recent trip to Rosarito, the highly respected Pharm.Ds in the white cloaks told me if I took their viagra, "my peepee go boing!"

One quick response. The States does have this. I am a mail carrier and i deliever meds all day long. Granted you can't call up a store and have it in 30 mins or less, but you can order them and have them as soon as next day. :D just my .02

go look at stock bottles in your pharmacy, I bet you find a lot of drugs manufactured in india and other places outside the US. How do you think walmart can sell a 90 day supply for 7 bucks?

manufacturing outside of the US and dispensing are two COMPLETELY different things.

The issues with the manufacturing of drugs outside the U.S. are similar to the issues dealing with outsourcing.

From a corporate business POV, the idea of getting drugs manufactured outside the U.S. (typically in India) is more profitable because it’s cheaper labor.

However, if you’re a pharmacist or an aspiring pharmacist your main concern should be with how will these ‘cheaper’ outsourced drugs affect your patients’ health. So the questions you should ask yourselves are:

-Why are these drugs cheaper? Is there a trade-off (sacrificing product quality for cheaper price)?
-How are these drugs imported and handled?
-Were these drugs delivered under bio-safe conditions?
-If these drugs were made in a different country, what were the guidelines used to produce these drugs? Did the manufacturer use the same FDA guidelines in the U.S?

I thought drugs produced outside the US, but sold in the US, still had to pass FDA?

The pharmacist who I once worked for strongly opposes the sale of drugs from foreign manufacturers in the US...

...he also works for the R & D dept. at Roche and many of their competitors are foreign manufacturers.

Yes, I understand that. But the OP asked "I was just wondering what are pharmacists' views on purchasing prescription drugs outside the U.S.?" I immediately thought about drug distros. Perhaps I misinterpreted the question.

you can actuallly have them faster. i work at an independent pharmacy that delivers. we do same day deliveries most of the time as long as it isn't a compound.

I'm not a pharmacist, but I have overheard 2 different pharmacists at my pharmacy recommend some patients (who are foreign) to go to mexico to get antibiotics...

I personally do not see anything wrong with that. I guess in some countries there are OTC antibiotics but not in the US. Any other drugs... I dont know.

See i learn something new everyday.:D We do keep up with other countries.

Sounds like you're in a border community. Even though abx's can be dirt cheap (generic cipro, amox, etc...), paying the MD/PA/NP for a clinic visit can easily wipe out your wallet and make a 2-3 hour wait coming back from MX worth it.

My issue would be that the pt is self-diagnosing and might not necessarily know the spectrum needed for whatever bug they have. Who knows, they might have a viral infection.
