Q: Bachelor's Degree from a Community College?

My younger brother is currently a HS senior graduating from a Highschool/CC-dual enrollment program. As a result, he additionally is graduating with an A.S. in Biology and has completed every premed pre-req at the community college setting. After graduation, he plans to continue at the CC which offers a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science, as he is very interested in the field and this is the only institution offering this degree in our area.

My brother is set on becoming an MLS as he is passionate about it, but he has expressed interest in possibly pursuing medical school in the future. Will he encounter any problems applying to medical schools ~5-10 years from now given that his bachelor (and every prereq) came from a CC?

Although your brother‘s case may be unusual because he is so young, medical schools generally frown on taking all prereqs at a CC because those classes are generally considered to be less rigorous and less competitive.

Also, 5-10 years from now, all of his grades will be 5-10 years old. The odds are high that at that point schools will want to see more recent grades to be able to determine his ability to withstand the academic rigor of medical school.

Bottom line - if he is committed to MLS now, tell him to go for it without regard to what he might want to do a decade from now. Things change, but if he wants to go forward after all that time, he's probably looking at taking upper level courses at a DIY post-bacc at that time.
